The trial of an Española woman accused of masterminding her uncle’s death almost two years ago got underway Wednesday in Santa Fe.

Authorities say 64-year-old Rudy Montoya was beaten with a bat and stabbed more than 40 times by Angel Baldonado, now 24, of Ohkay Owingeh and Sheanne Martinez, now 20, of Chimayó, who also burglarized his Chimayó home. Both women have taken plea deals in exchange for agreeing to testify against Montoya’s niece, 36-year-old Rhiannon Montoya.

The sheer brutality of the last few high profile cases that we have seen...The teens who targeted and savagely killed two homeless men, The man who abused and murdered a 3 year old child, (and let's not forget the pending trial for his girlfriend) and now this sorry excuse for a human being and her murderous band of thugs. I am seriously starting to think that we should bring the death penalty back to our state...All of these are without a doubt capital crimes...

Then again, what's the point? Our District Attorney will plead them down to misdemeanors and our Judges will sentence them to nothing...
