Mayoral candidate Roman “Tiger” Abeyta said an email sent to the news media and others Monday showing his campaign manager in his underwear purportedly soliciting sex in a Craigslist ad is an unseemly attempt to sabotage his bid for mayor.

Ray Sandoval, Abeyta’s campaign manager, acknowledged that it’s him in the photograph, but he denied ever placing such an ad. The email came to his attention after it was sent to the board of the Kiwanis Club. The club puts on the annual burning of Zozobra, an event Sandoval organized with much fanfare this year.

Ok, I'll admit that I was originally drawn to this story because of the scandal...and the picture (holy cow that is one attractive man). I have been reading the comments pretty much for entertainment purposes. But some people take it too far. Why try to destroy this man's reputation? For a municipal election? Really?? Why judge? You don't know this guy's story. Maybe he was once chubby and excited to show off the killer body he worked for. Maybe he posted the picture to try and get dates, Who cares! Who cares if there are more pictures? He's clearly a grown man, who cares enough his about community to take an active role in shaping it. He's an adult. Some of these comments seem more homophobic than anything. Would we be having this conversation if the ad were posted in the Men Looking For Women section? Or if they were taken by his girlfriend rather than his boyfriend? We all have closets, and we all have skeletons. Imagine if we were all solely judged on the dumb things we've done... or on things we've done in our most intimate moments. Totally out of line Frank Rivera. Grow up. People should decide elections based on who the best candidate is, not who has the best team of character assassins.

Once again a supporter of one of the frightened candidates attempts to misdirect. Thank god the voters of Santa Fe are smarter then you. A crime was committed, The photo was taken from Sandoval's Facebook page according to press reports. You would have to be a scumbag friend to have done it. Then a phoney sex ad is run where the image is used and his first name used. That's identify theft. And then an anonymous emailer who has not stepped forward to show his colors (i.e. who he supports in case you didn't get it Frank) sends the emails flying. None of this raises your supposed moral hackles? Apparently only if you hope to attack a candidates campaign. I look for more of you to come out from under your rocks in the months ahead and try and pollute the Mayors race. That is indeed unfortunate, the citizens of Santa Fe deserve better.

To me the image isn’t a big deal in regards to depiction. The issue for me is about discernable judgment. It’s evident one’s academic background is not an entrée to practicing sound judgment. With such learned training and a degree in law, you’d suspect that Mr. Sandoval would have the sensibility to not place such a suggestive image into cyber space, making it available to any and everyone. Whether you are gay, straight, whatever - don’t fault others for your poor judgment, your own vanity and narcissistic tendencies. I surmise that where there is smoke there is fire. I would not be surprised if more provocative images ultimately surface related to this individual. If Sandoval lacked judgment and placed this photo into the void of cyber space I would imagine the possibility of other, more impeachable images surfacing of him. Though accusers assert that Gonzales’ camp was the source of dissemination of the image no evidence has been provided to support such an allegation. It’s unsubstantiated. This tactic could have been engaged by any of the candidates and their campaigns, or Sandoval did in fact place the Craigslist ad and he’s just too embarrassed to admit to it. Sandoval disclosed that he was the one who placed this image on the internet initially. Roman Abeyta’s campaign manager was a victim of his own poor judgment, his vanity and his hubris.

I hadn't considered the possibility of a lesbian conspiracy. Maybe supporters of Santa Fe's first (and long serving) openly gay city counselor are jealous of the attention the new gays are getting in this election. But if that's the case, wouldn't their first target be the candidate who is (now) openly gay, instead of the the openly gay campaign manager of a straight candidate? Or is this maybe just the first strike in a bigger plan to stir up the anti-gay crowd, which might make Javier Gonzales the next target of Patti's backers?

Isn't that the point of Facebook ... wanting "the World to see" you. Maybe you find red-hot flaming bodies distasteful but I don't. And by the way, why do so many women on this site have photos of dogs for their image?

I think the guy looks HOT! In fact I'm getting excited about politics again. Javier, Ben Ray, Ray Sandoval, Patti and a trans-gender Zozobra ... Ohhh, now I am really aroused by Santa Fe. But to make 'Gay Marriage' the center of one's political philosophy is silly because homosexual sex, marriage and running for mayor are not all what they're cracked up to be. Believe me I know.

Does anyone really believe that Mayor Coss' police force will thoroughly investigate a politically motivated slanderous crime committed against one of Javier Gonzales' political rivals?

Pay no attention to the union operatives behind the curtain, nothing to see here.

John, I would like to know how Abeyta truly looked the other way after an environmental disaster happened and how he personally swept it under the rug. I would also like to know which Abeyta family members benefited from the Borrego family ranch purchase. Last I checked the Borrego family is supporting Javier Gonzales in this race....

Got an ax to grind....maybe so...

Jack, I do have something against people who takeover the government for friends and family, are you one, just generalizing? I am against having numerous family members hired in the government I administer. (I think one is an admitted forger) also don't like him trying to look the other way when an environmental disaster occurs and try to sweep it under the rug ( courthouse fiasco) authorize the Borrego ranch purchase for friends and family then quit saying he accomplished all of his goals, those are probably not our goals. the only thing detracting from my comments is your circular logic!

Back on topic John, a crime has been committed and the police will deal with it. I looked at your posts and see you too have something against Abeyta which detracts from any comments you would make.

Well stated Spinninfyre, if that campaign can handle such tactics regardless of where they originate I am thinking they have a good chance at winning and maybe that is why they are being attacked.

To put this issue to rest once and for all, is to get the identify of the person who posted the ad. I believe it is the person who posted the Craigslist ad that should be held accountable. That person is the one who committed identify theft. Then we will all know who posted the ad.

So I get this straight Benny. From your postings you are a Dimas supporter. And you for some reason have an issue with kittens as if you think they aren't good? Is that an official statement from Bills' campaign? It could really hurt him with animal lovers. And paranoiac ramblings about a candidate and his campaign manager creating this circumstance? Wow, sort of boggles the mind. Here is what we know. Candidate’s campaign manager is targeted in a smear and actually has what would seem a crime committed against him (identity theft). He files a police report. The police will investigate and get to the bottom of it all. Not familiar with Abeytas’ family but what would his Grandfather have to do with the campaign? Sounds like you have a personal grudge here friend. Reflects poorly on the candidate you support. You know the old adage about with friends like you….

I still don't know who I'm going to vote for but I feel it'd be in the best interest of Santa Fe voters to research Bill Dimas's sentencing records from when he was a Magistrate Judge.

I hear this is why Sandoval was let go while he was working for the Obama administration? Maybe this is their own camp trying to make the public feel sympathetic for them? I don't know just thinking, if not this is very disgusting and very wrong. John hendry is a real scum bag so I would not put it past him, this has him Carol and Morty and the whole CLC and AFSCME written all over it. By the way where does the Tiger come from? I always knew him to be more of a little kitten! His grandfather is a good man but he is nothing like his grandfather people need to look at his record as county manager and all the stuff he pretended not to know about. Still guilty to me.

Why does the reporter Daniel J. Chacon and/or his editor find it ethical to post a reproduction of a photo which the subject claims was misappropriated and manipulated with text which casts him in unfavorable light? Does the SFNM plan to run the photos and entirety of every manufactured personal attack which finds its way to the internet? I guess reporting the story without the salacious ad-copy would have been in poor taste? Who's agenda is being served by this treatment? Makes one wonder.

This is horrible to put it lightly, reminiscent of dirty Chicago style politics...I sure hope that Ray Sandoval personally follows up and ensures a thorough law enforcement investigation into this. Something like this cannot just be water under the bridge a week from now, whoever did this needs to be exposed and prosecuted.

If Gonzales' campaign was not responsible for this, then perhaps someone who has deep-seated resentment towards Mr. Sandoval for his exemplary leadership in returning Zozobra to our community.

I am very much undecided. I think that Bushee, Abeyta, Dimas and Wurzberger are all appealing in different ways, and have different strengths. I am going to wait to learn more as the campaigns progress.

Another pseudonymed Gonzales attack dog trying to conduct political spin. I think it is safe to say the Gonzales campaign is in crisis mode. This is a desperate attempt to remain relevant by attacking the opponent. Shameful exacerbation of an already deplorable act.

Javier Gonzales says he is "running a clean race" and it is, "not in his DNA to be disrespectful like that to anybody." Unfortunately for Gonzales the facts say otherwise. He has hardly a smidgen of credibility left after his campaign was caught colluding with his PAC, and Jon Hendry was caught lying about his (and the campaign's) involvement. Simply stated, this is reprehensible. It is a crime. Gonzales' life inside and outside of politics has been riddled with, and marred by, one single defining characteristic, deceit.

My heart goes out to Mr. Sandoval. What an incredible invasion of privacy, and attempt at character assassination. I believe legal ramifications are in order.

Well said. This was also my response to the article. Looks like Jon Hendry is Gonzales' Carl Rove. Also, Gonzales, just out of the closet, taking the noble high road as another gay man is attacked. Are we to be subjected to these disgusting, desperate tactics for the next four months?

This stinks to high heaven! I can't believe we have sunk this low for a city election....This kind of character assassination is usually reserved for the national arena... I'm also not buying Javier Gonzales' statement that it's not part of his "DNA to do anything that disrespectful" and that he's " running a clean race". This has all the hallmarks of a hatchet job from an out of state PAC....And Javier is the only candidate with direct links and close ties to both out of state PACs and Unions... It does not take a genius to connect the dots on this one!
