Albuquerque native and Vietnam veteran Sardo Sanchez said he and other veterans had been waiting for Friday’s arrival for a long time — because it was the day that Gov. Susana Martinez and the state officially proclaimed Vietnam Veterans Day in New Mexico.

The commemorative event in the Capitol Rotunda drew about 100 people, many of whom are active or retired military personnel. The one-hour ceremony included an invocation and benediction by the Rev. Richard Russo, an a cappella rendition of “The Star Spangled Banner” by New Mexico National Guard Staff Sgt. Joanne Najar, and the posting of colors by members of the Santa Fe and Las Vegas chapters of the Vietnam Veterans of America.
