Music was already playing and the downtown Santa Fe Plaza was crowded shortly before 6 p.m. Friday, when lightning struck a cottonwood tree on the park’s northeast corner.
“All of a sudden there was this huge flash,” said Linda Kerr, who was standing across the street with Kenny Byrnes. “It sounded like a bomb going off.”
