The Senate passed a measure Sunday that aims to keep struggling New Mexico hospitals open by directing the state Human Services Department to help make up the shortfall in funding for indigent care.
Senators on Sunday bashed the Human Services Department for foisting the funding burden for indigent care onto counties and hospitals. Several senators said the department saw the crisis coming and should have offered a solution long before the waning days of the legislative session that is scheduled to end Thursday.
