Pay for New Mexico’s public school teachers, educational aides and transportation workers will increase and class sizes will decrease, thanks to appropriations in the fiscal year 2015 operating budget passed by the Legislature this week.
The state budget of about $6.2 billion includes some $2.74 billion for public schools, as well as a 3 percent average raise for all state employees, including teachers and educational assistants. The base pay for teachers will rise $2,000 at each level in the state’s three-tier system — to $32,000 for beginning Tier 1 teachers; $42,000 for Tier 2 teachers and $52,000 for Tier 3 teachers.
