On Page A-4 of the Sunday, June 8, 2014, edition, a story about a container that leaked radioactivity in the underground Waste Isolation Pilot Plant near Carlsbad said, “The state Environment Department, in an April 2013 audit, approved the waste stream” of materials sent from Los Alamos National Laboratory to WIPP. The story didn’t make clear that it was a federal audit and not performed by the state agency. The state’s oversight of waste streams is limited to observation and review of audits performed by the Department of Energy and its auditors.
