Lt. Gov. John Sanchez says he will not run for governor in 2018.
In a Facebook post this afternoon, Republican Sanchez said, "As many of you know, Steve Pearce announced his campaign to be New Mexico’s next governor this week. While I continue to work toward a decision for my future, I can say that I will not be a candidate for governor in 2018. Steve has been a good friend and ally over the years. I wish him the best of luck in his campaign."
There has been much speculation that Sanchez, lieutenant governor under Gov. Susana Martinez for the past seven years, might seek the U.S. Senate seat held by incumbent Democrat Martin Heinrich, or perhaps the 1st Congressional District seat that Democrat Michelle Lujan Grisham is leaving to run for governor.
