There's no 120-second mercy rule in boys basketball.
"We tried to win the game in the first 2 minutes," said Thomas Vigil, Mesa Vista head coach.
When that didn't happen, the Trojans settled for a 28-10 second-quarter scoring advantage en route to a 70-43 victory over Monte del Sol in nondistrict play Thursday night in Ojo Caliente.
It was the season opener for Mesa Vista. The Dragons dipped to 1-2.
"We came out a little too tight," Vigil said. "It took us a while to settled down."
Monte del Sol beat the buzzer for 16-13 at the end of the first quarter. Mesa Vista outscored the Dragons by 18 points over the next eight minutes to lead 41-26 at intermission. The gap was 61-34 heading into the fourth quarter.
"We came out and had that early lead and showed what we were capable of," Jonathan Haack, Monte del Sol head coach, said. " ... We fought hard."
Mesa Vista proved to be too much, though.
"We came out with a lot of emotion," Vigil said. "Defensively, we were trying to do too much and all we did was hack. They were in the double-bonus in the first quarter."
For the second quarter one, the Trojans got what the wanted — open looks down low and open looks from the perimeter.
Eugene Trujillo and Ramon Trujillo evenly divided 28 points, with Eugene draining four 3-pointers. Estevan Trujillo also scored 14 points.
The Trujillos' only relations are as teammates and friends.
Junior Aaron Vogel scored 24 points for the Dragons while freshman Dennis Mares added 11.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Mesa Vista 69, Monte del Sol 16
The Lady Trojans scored the final 15 points of the first quarter and led 34-9 at intermission in a nondistrict game in Ojo Caliente.
Mesa Vista is 2-0, Monte del Sol is 0-2.
The Lady Trojans trailed 6-0.
"I told the girls not to take them lightly," said Richard Montoya, Mesa Vista head coach.
The Lady Trojans ironed their early wrinkles then flatted Monte del Sol with a second-quarter press.
Crystal Martinez scored 26 points and Carmelita Trujillo added 10 for Mesa Vista.
Andrea Lozano had five points and 10 rebounds for the Lady Dragons, and Alicia Lujan had an eight-rebound and seven blocks.
Senior point guard Amelia Brycelea sprained her knee at the beginning of the second quarter and was lost for the game, according to Monte del Sol head coach Nicolas Trouvat.
The Lady Trojans took a 59-13 lead into the fourth quarter.
