Highlands downs Grand Canyon

After a net-popping opening night performance in the Skyhawk Classic, Roman Andrade has a tough act to follow.

His own.

Andrade poured in 30 points as New Mexico Highlands University defeated Grand Canyon University, 81-74, Friday in the men's basketball tournament at Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colo.

"This is a great first win of the season against a quality team," Joe Harge, Highlands head coach, said.

Andrade added five steals and four assists to his game- and season-high scoring performance. Mindaugas Markevicius finished with 15 points and Kelvin Franklin added 12 for the Cowboys.

Highlands (1-1) faces Calumet College at 3 this afternoon.

Blue Jackets beat Eldorado in hockey

Danny Quinn had a pair of goals and Alex Cloud-Russell added a third as the Blue Jackets cruised to a 3-1 win over Eldorado at the Genoveva Chavez Community Center on Friday night.

Goalie Jordan Fuentes had 11 saves in the win, the second of the season for the 2-0 Blue Jackets.

"We scored a goal in the first, second and third periods and Danny played real good tonight," said coach Paul DeVincentis.

Jackson Spingler had a pair of assists while Burch Ault, Craig Perry and Mike Specht added one apiece.
