ALBUQUERQUE -- Albuquerque Mayor Richard Berry is offering 17 new recommendations to the city's police oversight process, including requiring biannual public sessions.
Berry's office announced the recommendations Friday and said they follow a three-month review.
The move comes as local civil rights activist continue to press for the U.S. Justice Department to investigate 21 officer-involved shootings since January 2010. U.S. Justice Department officials have not said if they would launch an investigation.
Since last year, the police department has instituted a number of reforms like requiring an independent unit investigate all officer involved shootings and strengthening requirements for new cadets.
But Berry has declined to give the Police Oversight Commission more authority over officer discipline. He is, however, recommending that panel members receive training.
