Santa Fe Public Schools' bond election -- which renews the district's Senate Bill 9 mill levy, generating about $12.7 million per year for six years -- takes place Tuesday. Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Revenues from the 2-mill levy are used to update technology, buy computers, improve libraries, provide playground and physical-education equipment and musical instruments, and perform minor repairs to existing school facilities. The levy also provides funding for emergency maintenance at schools.
The levy money cannot be used to pay salaries of school employees.
While local and state charter schools will receive some of the mill-levy money, about 89 percent of it will go to Santa Fe Public Schools.
This mill-levy bond should not be mixed up with the SB 9 bill sponsored by Sen. Peter Wirth, D-Santa Fe, that lowers the corporate income tax for New Mexico businesses and forces out-of-state businesses to pay more income tax.
