Nurses group honors Domenici

The Emergency Nurses Association has given Sen. Pete Domenici, an Albuquerque Republican, its 2008 Public Service Award.

The award recognizes Domenici's efforts to build broad-based support for legislation to provide parity in health care coverage for mental health and addiction treatment.

Sen. Edward Kennedy also got an award for his work with Domenici in securing the Senate passage of the Mental Health Parity Act in 2007.

The group's annual Public Service Award honors members of congress who take active leadership roles in health care policy and who are advocates for nursing, health care or injury prevention issues.

Public forum covers integrative medicine

The University of New Mexico will hold a free public forum on integrative medicine in Santa Fe on Oct. 12.

The event, at the Santa Fe Convention Center from 5-7 p.m., will educate attendees about the role integrative medicine plays in disease prevention and general wellness.

Called "Simply Spectacular," the forum will feature a comedy show, dance performances and music. Experts will then discuss those activities and their health benefits.

Call the UNM Center for Life in Albuquerque at 272-3942 for information.

All's Fairey in national politics

The image is iconic in contemporary political art. And it's been inside your head for more than a year. Art critic Peter Schjeldahl of The New Yorker has referred to it as "the most efficacious American political illustration since 'Uncle Sam Wants You.'" Indeed, it may still be seen in a variety of places, including during your daily commute. Just look for it on the tailgates and rear windows of nearly every other pickup and car in a town of liberal-minded voters — that simple red, white, and blue head-and-shoulders shot of Barack Obama peering outward in a pensive gaze with the word "hope" written across the bottom. The image was designed by Los Angeles street artist Shepard Fairey in 2008. »Story
