First Place, teens' poetry

She enters your life once a year, and many are glad when she appears

Because she bring great gifts that shine and glow, among these gifts is the silky snow

A delicate white sheet spread over the land, by the winter's caring hand

As the bright sun shines over this layer, a glint of light sails through the air.

Delicate flower bouquets without a single flaw, form on glass as all stare in awe

These perfect fine ice mandalas so unique, everyone wants to sneak a peek

But these are not the only gifts that winter has to share — there is also the chilling breeze sifting through the air.

This wind is a whole new level of cold, a fell icy wind with frosty strikes bold

Many consider this wind a curse, but I believe it's also a verse

A verse in winter's sacred song, a song that is three whole months long.

In this song there are many parts, some are quite brief, yet some are from the heart

The carolers chanting their blessings to thee, warming your soul and home

The wind blowing softly in the pine trees, a soft and quiet moan.

The sound of families that celebrate, the families cook and decorate

Preparing for a special meal, which on this day means a great deal.

A holiday is what it is to be called, a get-together for one and all

To celebrate a very special day, in a traditional yet a unique way

The Winter also bears a delicious perfume, a fragrance that enters every room

Every house and every corner, everyone smells her defining aura

An aura of spice, it's truly nice

Unless sweets are your only vice!

The sweet pies, candies and cakes, all of which in the oven bake

The entire turkey and all that good stuff, and, of course, pie with whipped cream tufts

Waiting to be served at night to little children eyes wide and bright.

The children have been enjoying the winter's gifts all day, sliding down icy hills and using snow to play

Making snow angels in the small crystal flakes, rising early in the morning and causing everyone to wake

The children see why winter's visit is wanted — however, some adults feel rather taunted

The snow prevents the adults from driving to work, and, in their delicacy, seniors are bound to get hurt

All it takes is a minor slip, and they are lying on the ground having a fit.

There is one way that the winter gets adults to gaze on her in her beautiful phase

Winter is an eyeful at night, and you can see the glorious sight

Of her carrying a gown of lights, an outlook of elegant might.

You watch as all the lights turn on, and then winter puts a smile on

The night lets her shine, her light is divine

And all over the world people can see why they love the winter time.

All's Fairey in national politics

The image is iconic in contemporary political art. And it's been inside your head for more than a year. Art critic Peter Schjeldahl of The New Yorker has referred to it as "the most efficacious American political illustration since 'Uncle Sam Wants You.'" Indeed, it may still be seen in a variety of places, including during your daily commute. Just look for it on the tailgates and rear windows of nearly every other pickup and car in a town of liberal-minded voters — that simple red, white, and blue head-and-shoulders shot of Barack Obama peering outward in a pensive gaze with the word "hope" written across the bottom. The image was designed by Los Angeles street artist Shepard Fairey in 2008. »Story
