New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson will meet with Venezuelean President Hugo Chavez this week to discuss three American hostages being held by rebel forces in Colombia.

The Americans have been held hostage by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) since 2003. Their families asked Richardson to intervene, and Richardson visited Colombia last month.

Earlier this year, FARC released six Colombian hostages to Chavez. Richardson will travel to Venezuela and meet with Chavez on Friday.

Richardson has been a freelance diplomatic troubleshooter before, including missions to North Korea, Cuba and Iraq.
