Unit 113, a new play from Santa Fe's Chimera Project in collaboration with Santa Fe Performing Arts, debuts Friday, showcasing production and design that the young actors and actresses helped create.
Members of SFPA's Teen Ensemble and City Different Players have been involved in crafting the play since work began on Sept. 7. The 16 Santa Fe students, all between 7 and 18 years old, brainstormed with members of Meow Wolf and Santa Fe Performing Arts to develop a storyline that fit everyone's interests. With help from Vince Kadlubek, Meow Wolf's founder, a script was formulated and the process kept moving.
Costume and set design was done by the actors, with guidance from supervising crew members. Piece by piece, Unit 113 became a reality.
Set in a dystopian future, the performance tells the story of eight children who, as part of a state-directed transitional-living program called GLOBAL, are assigned to "guardians" who will model for the children an example of what a model citizen should be. Emotionless and stern, the guardians inspire feelings of unease in the children, leading them to take action in ways that change the system forever.
Unit 113 is not just a play featuring children and teenagers from Santa Fe, it is a play created by them. Showtimes are 7 p.m. on Dec. 2, 3, 9 and 10; 2 p.m. on Dec. 4 and 11. General admission is $8 each night at the Armory for the Arts Theater, 1050 Old Pecos Trail.
