The Thing is the prequel to John Carpenter's 1982 film that starred Kurt Russell. The original movie, called
The Thing from another Planet, was released in 1951.
Despite the slightly humorous name,
The Thing is perhaps one of the scariest films I have ever sat through.
The newest version replicates John Carpenter's version, where researchers in Antarctica find an alien life-form submerged in ice. After it breaks free, the alien devours the researchers and slowly takes human form. This leaves survivors without anyone to trust.
Perhaps it was the blistering arctic wind scenes that made me shake inside the movie theater, but it's just as possible that mere suspense and paranoia had a similar affect of me. The gruesome "transformation" scenes were so brutal that I had to pull my hat over my eyes multiple times because several scenes were simply disgusting.
This movie is so intense, I considered walking out of theater, which is something I've never done. Although I thought the ending was a bit overdone, the overall film is fantastic and stayed true to John Carpenter's 1980s film.
If you want to be terrified, completely grossed out, or simply horrified this Halloween,
The Thing this is definitely the movie to see.
