We've all heard Santa's story — he goes out every Christmas Eve and delivers gifts to "good" boys and girls around the world in just one night. He's a pretty amazing guy. But Generation Next had a few more questions for the man in red. So, we headed out to find the jolly ol' man and caught up with him at the DeVargas Center. Here's what we found:

Generation Next: How do you feel when you see impersonators?

Santa Claus: Santa is the soul of generosity, so how can I be anything but generous when someone wants to help me do my job and make people happy? Everybody can embody the spirit of Santa Claus because everybody can make people happy. Everybody can!

Generation Next: Do you own a razor?

Santa Claus: Well, yes, I trim around the edges, but I keep the beard because it's so cold around the North Pole.

Generation Next: Why coal?

Santa Claus: We used to do that, but now it's not environmentally a good idea. Besides, there are no really bad kids anywhere. We don't do the coal thing anymore.

Generation Next: Which continent do you start on?

Santa Claus: Usually I start at the zero median, Europe, but it depends on the weather. Sometimes the international datelines. But time is totally different on Christmas Eve for Santa.

Generation Next: What has been your weirdest request?

Santa Claus: There have been a couple of situations where kids don't ask for anything for themselves. Just a mommy who has a very serious disease to get better. Unfortunately, this is something Santa can't really deal with. It just has to work out. I just try to bring happiness and happiness is very important.

Generation Next: Is checking it twice really necessary?

Santa Claus: Sure is. If you don't, you turn in sloppy work. That's not good. That doesn't increase happiness.

Generation Next: Do you believe in the Easter Bunny?

Santa Claus: I guess he would be really unhappy with me if I said "No," wouldn't he?

Generation Next: What message would you give to those who want to be like you?

Santa Claus: Just do it! Because what I'm doing is making people happy (and) making the world a better place to be. If everyone in the world would do that, just think of what a wonderful world we'd have. Go for it!

The circle will be unbroken

Charles MacKay became Santa Fe Opera's third general director on Oct. 1, 2008. Looked at one way, that means he'll have been on the job just 276 days when the 2009 season opens on Friday, July 3. On the other hand, there's an excellent case to be made that MacKay has been preparing for this position, sometimes on the job, for quite a bit longer. Try 40-some years. »Story

Nevada's nuclear secret

CENTRAL NEVADA TEST AREA, Nev. — At the center of a desolate valley in the middle of Nevada, more than a dozen miles from the nearest paved road, one of the few signs of human activity is a rusty steel well casing that juts oddly out of the desert floor. »Story
