Destroyer, a Canadian band described by its front man, Dan Bejar, as "European blues," has spent the last two years releasing the musical equivalent of wet spaghetti — EPs, or extended plays — to see if anything would stick. The band started in 1996, trying to make a name for themselves in Vancouver . In 2000, Bejar broke away from the group, causing the band to take a year-long break. The band eventually regrouped in 2001.

Fast forward 10 years, and Destroyer kicked off 2011 strong by releasing Kaputt, which is a mix of new sounds and classic Destroyer music. This album draws much inspiration from the David Bowie-ish, '70s glam-rock style. The guitars are soft but rhythmic, the drums are minimal but nonetheless present, and Bejar has turned his voice — normally reminiscent of early Bob Dylan — into sighing, whispering clouds of lyrical genius.

This album it has the additions of flute, sax and trumpet, which together make an entertaining yet relaxing album that I love to listen to when I'm walking around town on the snow-filled streets or riding a bus around the city.

Every time I give Kaputt a listen, I discover small nuances I've never heard before. Like, for example, how deep the lyrics are, or how the sax and trumpet duets fit so nicely with the clean guitar riffs. I love this album, and I would love to hear anything else these guys record.
