If you were lucky enough to have had a PlayStation 2 when new games were released — like I was — you might have played Sucker Punch' s 2002
Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus, or any others in the
Sly Cooper series, which have all been re-released on one Blu-ray disc in the
Sly Cooper Collection.
It's a great deal — especially if you've never played the games and don't mind overlooking some flaws common in older games.
This first game,
Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus, provides a good platform for the entire series, but it has a few irritating errors. Case in point: It isn't exactly a hard game, but the lack of a health bar and constant one-hit kills can get bothersome — especially at tricky spots. This game is unlike any other in the series because it's set up entirely different, and it's my least favorite of the series.
The second game,
Sly 2: Band of Thieves, is set up with an open world city where Sly and his other cohorts can explore, fight and collect items. This game is still a platformer at heart with more attention to sneaking around giant environments and pick-pocketing the wealthiest guards.
Thieves uses missions and many other additions that make it the best in the series.
The third game,
Sly 3: Honor Among Thieves, uses the same style as the second, but spruces up the graphics and adds some new gadgets. However, it ultimately feels like a continuation of the second — which isn't a bad thing, but is still a letdown in some ways. The new environments and characters are fun, but it seemed like there was something lacking from this last one.
So if you're still wondering whether to buy the package deal — and you don't care about the sometimes cheesy voice acting and sometimes clunky camera control — definitely buy it. It is like playing a good spy movie with a twist.
