The Demons of Santa Fe High could have only hoped that the second half of their District 2AAAAA boys soccer match Friday could've gone more like the first.

But it didn't.

Tied at 1 at halftime, the Demons couldn't stop the Albuquerque High snowball that rolled itself to a 7-1 win.

"That's a good way to put it," Demons head coach A.J. Herrera said of the snowball effect. "We kind of fell apart. They scored in the 42nd minute and the 45th minute."

And by that point, it was pretty much over for the Demons, who fell to 5-10 overall, 1-4 in 2AAAAA.

Edward Howard scored the Demons' lone goal.

FOOTBALL

Portales 35, St. Michael's 0

The Horsemen went into the half of their final nondistrict game trailing 7-0, but couldn't hold off the Rams.

"With their high-powered offense, I was pretty happy with how we played,"
St. Michael's head coach Joey Fernandez said. "In the second half, we kind of tired out, but I thought the kids played pretty good."

The Horsemen (2-4) had some good opportunities to score in the first half, but couldn't find the goal line.

"We had a couple of chances in the red zone, but we didn't come away with any points," Fernandez said.

VOLLEYBALL

Monte del Sol 3, Santa Fe Waldorf 0

The service line was good for Monte del Sol in a 25-14, 25-22, 25-21 nondistrict win over Waldorf.

"The only thing that got us through was our serving," Monte del Sol head coach Shanna Marsh-Martinez said. "Waldorf was hustling."

Rachel Franklin led the Lady Dragons (2-10) with 17 service points and Marisa Danielson had 12.

The circle will be unbroken

Charles MacKay became Santa Fe Opera's third general director on Oct. 1, 2008. Looked at one way, that means he'll have been on the job just 276 days when the 2009 season opens on Friday, July 3. On the other hand, there's an excellent case to be made that MacKay has been preparing for this position, sometimes on the job, for quite a bit longer. Try 40-some years. »Story
