Andrew Borrego scored in the final minute of regulation and the Santa Fe High Demons withstood Gallup during injury time to win 2-1 in a nondistrict boys soccer match Saturday.

"There were 10 minutes of injury time," Santa Fe head coach A.J. Herrera said. "We were just trying to hold them off."

Borrego, who also scored in the 42nd minute on an assist from Andre Miller, scored his second goal off a rebound. Issac De Luna's shot from 35 yards out deflected off Gallup 'keeper Tyler Payton and toward Borrego, who headed it into the net in the 79th minute.

Gallup had tied the match in the 53rd minute, but the Demons (3-1-1) kept their composure.

"Against Los Lunas we got scored on and our heads went down and we pretty much fell apart," Herrera said. "Today was the opposite. Gallup scored and was pumped and we raised our energy and went back to work."

Santa Fe outshot Gallup 22-11.

St. Michael's 10, Portales 0

It took the Horsemen 40 minutes to score their first five goals and only 10 minutes to mercy-rule the Rams in the District 2A-AAA opener in Portales.

The match was called on the 10-goal mercy rule in the 50th minute.

"We haven't played in about 10 days," said Merritt Brown, St. Michael's head coach. "This was kind of a way to get our feet back under us."

Grant Duke used his boots to net four goals. Anthony Delgado added a pair of goals, while Jett Pendleton, Robert Medeiros and Gabe Ortiz each scored one. Eric Fishback started the scoring in the 12th minute.

St. Michael's (2-0-1) has a busy week. Los Alamos visits Brother Abdon Field on Tuesday, while the Horsemen travel to Santa Fe Preparatory on Thursday and Piedra Vista in Farmington on Saturday.

Desert Academy Invitational

The host Wildcats secured the four-team, round-robin tournament title with an 8-nil victory over West Las Vegas at Salvador Perez.

Santa Fe Waldorf, which blanked the Desert Academy junior varsity 3-0, was the runner-up. Tony Burling, of Waldorf, was named the tournament's most valuable player.

Ram Khalsa scored three goals and assisted on four others in the Wildcats' win over West Las Vegas. Nick Gerber, Elijah Griffo-Black, Dana Coffman, Zac Sheppard and Alex Kokesh capped the goal-scoring.

"We attacked very well," said Rob Lochner, Desert Academy head coach. "I have nothing but good things to stay about my guys today."

Desert Academy (3-0) hopes to expand the small-school tournament to eight teams next season.

GIRLS SOCCER

St. Michael's 9, Portales 0

Jamie Palermo scored five goals in an epic blowout to open District 2A-AAA play in Portales.

"Palermo was basically unstoppable today," St. Michael's head coach Ed Velie said.

It was pretty much a free-for-all once the Lady Horsemen quit stopping their own attacks with seven offsides calls in the first half.

Kate Vadurro added a pair of goals and Bridgette Butler and Caitlin Smith each added goals. Jami Hogan had three assists for the Lady Horsemen, who are 6-1 overall.

Margaret Hickey recorded five saves on seven Portales shots.

Clovis 2, Santa Fe High 0

A 31/2-hour bus ride and three missing starters were too much for the Demonettes to overcome in nondistrict play in Clovis.

Santa Fe High (1-3) fell behind 2-0 in the first half on goals by Caisha Bosque and Audi Rodella. Clovis collected 20 shots in the match.

"I was fairly happy with things," SFHS head coach Katie Roberts said. "It's always hard to replace your sweeper and your stopper."

Santa Fe High was without seniors Wylee Price, Kristin Graham and freshman Rose Miller. Roberts said she expects them all to return Monday against Taos.

Las Vegas Robertson 4, Capital 1

Ariana Trujillo gave the Lady Cardinals a four-goal, first-half head start in the non-district match in Las Vegas.

"She was just quicker than our defense," said Capital head coach Bobby Garcia.

The Lady Jaguars (0-4) avoided the shutout when Ashley Santos scored off a Brittney Rodriguez cross in the 75th minute.

"If we put a full 80 minutes together like we played the final 30 minutes today, we would be competing with a lot of these teams earlier," Garcia said. "But for some reason, the girls wait until they fall behind before they start playing and it's too hard to catch up."

The circle will be unbroken

Charles MacKay became Santa Fe Opera's third general director on Oct. 1, 2008. Looked at one way, that means he'll have been on the job just 276 days when the 2009 season opens on Friday, July 3. On the other hand, there's an excellent case to be made that MacKay has been preparing for this position, sometimes on the job, for quite a bit longer. Try 40-some years. »Story
