Paawee Rivera recorded a hat trick and Santa Fe Preparatory blanked Portales 6-0 in District 2A-AAA boys soccer at Brennand Field on Saturday.

"He just played out of his mind," is how Prep head coach Hersch Wilson described Rivera's match.

Rivera scored in the 8th, 22nd and 65th minutes, and also added an assist.

Sebastian Stokhof de Jong, Grayson Osgood and Marcus Baron also scored for Prep, which improved to 7-6 overall, 4-1 in 2A-AAA. Osgood, Brennan Gibbs and Jebb Norton also recorded assists.

Portales is 0-3 in 2A-AAA.

Santa Fe Prep 2, Portales 1 (shootout)

It took four tries and three shootouts, but the Blue Griffins finally won a match in overtime.

It was the team's second straight shootout, and Santa Fe Prep eked out a 4-3 advantage in District 2A-AAA play at Brennand Field. The goals came from Sullivan Wilson, Kiki Lenihan, June Broadley and Ali MacKenzie, and Sarah Simis came up with a save on the Lady Rams' fourth shot.

Yet, it wouldn't have been necessary if not for Portales' tying goal in the 76th minute. Blue Griffin head coach Rennae Ross said it was an indicator of the lack of focus her team sometimes has.

"That's been especially challenging this year — getting ourselves up and motivated, physically and mentally, and then staying focused," Ross said.

Devin McCloud gave Santa Fe Prep (5-9 overall, 3-1 2A-AAA) a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute with a goal on a direct kick from 35 yards.

Estancia 3, Desert Academy 0

The Lady Wildcats (3-4) didn't entertain any thoughts of beating the state's second-ranked team in Class AA in a 25-11, 25-9, 25-12 nondistrict win for the Lady Bears.

Instead, it was a chance to measure their progress against one of the toughest teams on their schedule.

"We got a long ways to go," Desert Academy head coach Natalie Passalacqua said. "They are starting to learn to jump and block and they are starting to adjust and line up to the hitters' shoulders. It's just a really good experience. Even if we do go to state (in Class A), we won't see a team as good as Estancia, at least not in the first round."

Corine Garcia had four kills, and Maredith Davis added six digs for Desert Academy.

The circle will be unbroken

Charles MacKay became Santa Fe Opera's third general director on Oct. 1, 2008. Looked at one way, that means he'll have been on the job just 276 days when the 2009 season opens on Friday, July 3. On the other hand, there's an excellent case to be made that MacKay has been preparing for this position, sometimes on the job, for quite a bit longer. Try 40-some years. »Story
