Something happened to the Taos defense Tuesday.

It disappeared.

Bad for Taos, good for the Capital Lady Jaguars as they scored in overtime to win the District 2AAAA girls soccer match 2-1.

Four minutes into the first overtime, Capital's Janette Perez took a pass from Melissa Chavez and scored.

"For some reason, no Taos players were near her," Bobby Garcia, Capital head coach, said. "She took a shot from 16 yards out and put it in the top of the net."

It wasn't the only breakdown for the Lady Tigers.

In the 72nd minute, Melissa Chavez took a rebound from a Brittany Rodriguez shot and tied the score at 1.

Jackie Valerio scored for Taos in the 5th minute.

The victory was a first against Taos for Garcia.

"It's huge," he said. "In the 10 years I've been coaching, we've never beaten Taos. So it's a huge victory for us."

Garcia credited the defense of Teresa Najeka, Matiza Ochoa, Jasmine Flores and Jasmine Bonilla.

The Lady Jaguars are (3-12 overall, 2-2 in 2AAAA).

St. Michael's 5, Las Vegas Robertson 0

Liana Coppola had quite the match.

So did Jami Hogan.

Coppola, the St. Michael's sophomore midfielder, scored two goals and had an assist, and Hogan, also a sophomore midfielder, scored two goals as the Lady Horsemen blanked the Lady Cardinals in a District 2A-AAA match.

"We had some great midfield play today and has some great tandem play today," St. Michael's head coach Ed Velie said.

Jamie Palermo volleyed in a cross from Kate Ayala for the other score. Palermo also added an assist, as did Bridgette Butler.

Margaret Hickey recorded four saves on five shots for the Lady Horsemen (12-4 overall, 4-0 in 2A-AAA). Taria Clayton had seven saves on 20 shots for Robertson (10-6 overall).

Albuquerque Sandia 10, Santa Fe High 0

The Lady Matadors made quick work of the Demonettes, and ended the District 2AAAAA match in the 65th minute at the Santa Ana Soccer Complex.

The Demonettes fall to 2-10 overall, 0-4 in 2AAAAA.

BOYS SOCCER

Albuquerque Sandia 2, Santa Fe High 0

The District 2AAAAA match at Santa Fe High was scoreless until the Matadors knocked in goals at the 56th and 59th minute. They owned a 15-6 shot advantage over the Demons, who fell to 5-9-1 overall and 1-3 in 2AAAAA.

"We hung in there," Santa Fe High head coach A.J. Herrera said. "Then we kind of lost our legs because our (varsity) numbers are so low."

VOLLEYBALL

Albuquerque La Cueva 3, Santa Fe High 0

Once again, Game 2 overshadowed an otherwise inspired performance from the Demonettes in a District 2AAAAA match in Toby Roybal Memorial Gymnasium.

The third-ranked Lady Bears won, 25-21, 25-13, 27-25.

Santa Fe High (5-11 overall, 1-2 2AAAA) had La Cueva down 18-16 in Game 1 before the Lady Bears closed with a 9-3 spurt. Game 3 was tied at 25-all before La Cueva closed out the match.

But Game 2 was a sore spot for Demonettes head coach Sam Estrada.

"Once again, we tanked it in the second game," Estrada said. "We had service error after service error and we just didn't shake it off."

Shivaughn Hatt led Santa Fe High with nine kills, while Kamille Borrego-Ojinaga had six. Borrego-Ojinaga also had 10 digs on the defensive side.

The circle will be unbroken

Charles MacKay became Santa Fe Opera's third general director on Oct. 1, 2008. Looked at one way, that means he'll have been on the job just 276 days when the 2009 season opens on Friday, July 3. On the other hand, there's an excellent case to be made that MacKay has been preparing for this position, sometimes on the job, for quite a bit longer. Try 40-some years. »Story
