The Demonettes of Santa Fe High don't want a one-dimension attack at the volleyball net.

On Tuesday, the they showed plenty of versatility as they swept Albuquerque High in a District 2AAAAA match 25-12, 25-23, 25-18 in Albuquerque.

Santa Fe High's two outside hitters, Kamille Borrego-Ojinaga and Shivaughn Hatt, were the leaders on the stat sheet as they each had seven kills. Clarissa Garcia recorded four kills, which is the kind of production Santa Fe High head coach Sam Estrada wants to see.

"We've focused on passing the ball around and trying to hit the ball from all sides," Estrada said. "We've also been practicing a lot from the back row and the outside as well."

The Demonettes (6-10 overall, 2-2 2AAAAA) also were strong defensively, which showed in Game 2. They rallied from a 20-18 deficit with a 7-3 closing run by forcing long rallies.

"We just showed a little bit of defensive tenacity to not give up and keep balls in play," Estrada said.

Tiedra Armijo had eight digs to lead Santa Fe High, while Borrego-Ojinaga recorded seven.

Santa Fe Preparatory 3, Pecos 0

The Blue Griffins were sure and steady, if not spectacular in a District 4AA match in Louis G. Sanchez Memorial Gymnasium. They struggled with their serve in Game 1, but that didn't deter from a 25-18, 25-16, 25-19 win.

Prep improved to 7-9 overall and 2-1 in 4AA.

"What I told the girls is that we went up to Pecos and still didn't play our best match and we won 3-0," Prep head coach Chris Chakares said.

NMSD 3, Walatowa 0

The Wilding sisters led the Lady Roadrunners to a District 2A sweep of the Lady Cougars, 25-17, 25-22, 25-17, in Larson Gym. Cy Wilding, a senior, had a team-high 20 kills, while freshman Caldonia Wilding registered 27 assists and nine aces.

NMSD (6-10 overall, 3-4 overall) fed off the momentum of a third-place finish in the Great Plains School for the Deaf Tournament in Minnesota over the weekend.

"We were ready to play today, and it showed in every aspect of the game," head coach Stacy Nowak said.

The Lady Roadrunners play host to district leader Desert Academy on Thursday.

St. Michael's 6, Desert Academy 0

It didn't matter if the District 2A-AAA match was at the Municipal Recreation Complex, where it was scheduled before it was closed because of poor weather conditions, or Salvador Perez Park. The Horsemen (10-7-2 overall, 7-0-1 2A-AAA) were clearly dominant in the first meeting between the programs.

St. Michael's scored four times in the first 29 minutes, and outshot the host Wildcats 22-4. Jaff Najjar and Grant Duke each had two goals, while Gabe Ortiz and Anthony Delgado had goals in the first half.

About the only thing that affected St. Michael's were the cold, damp weather conditions.

"I think we were just kind of controlling the tempo for most of the match," St. Michael's head coach Merritt Brown said. "We wanted to go out there stronger (in the second half), but I think with the cold, the kids were ready for it to be done."

The Wildcats (11-3, 4-3) were not prepared for the physical play of the Horsemen, which contributed to the first-half outburst.

"Their physicality took us back a bit in the beginning of the game," Desert Academy head coach Rob Lochner said. "It took us the first 30 minutes to get used to that physicality."

The teams face off again Saturday.
