Hersch Wilson could have singled out a number of his Santa Fe Preparatory Blue
Griffins following a 5-2 District 2A-AAA boys soccer victory over Monte del Sol on Monday afternoon at Brennand Field.

Instead, the Santa Fe Prep head coach lauded a member of the opposition.

"He did amazing work," Wilson said of Ryan Keffer, the Monte del Sol junior goalkeeper. "We put 47 shots on frame and only got five goals."

And most weren't scored until the final 20 minutes, when the Blue Griffins climbed out of a 2-0 hole.

"He kept them in the game," Wilson said. "He did a great, great job."

Seth Biderman, who took over for head coach Stuart Angel, who was serving a one-game suspension for a red card, concurred with Wilson.

"Ryan was fantastic," Biderman said. "A lot were pure reaction saves, where he didn't see the shot until it went through three or four sets of legs."

The Dragons (3-4, 0-1) gave the Blue Griffins (3-4, 1-1) an early wake-up call, scoring in the fifth minute on Lucas Henderson's free kick. Then, in the 30th minute, Henderson got his head on a corner kick and doubled the advantage.

The second goal also came 20 minutes after Forrest Ellers suffered a broken right leg, according to Biderman. The break was just above the ankle and left the Dragons with only 10 players for the duration.

It showed.

"In the second half, we just wore them out," Wilson said. "They barely touched the ball."

Again, Biderman agreed.

"They pretty much dominated the second half," he said.

Kevin Lowe had two goals, while Paawee Lee Rivera, Graham Sides and Marcus Brown scored one apiece.

BOYS SOCCER

Santa Fe High 6, Española Valley 0

All's well that ends well? It was for the Demons, who scored four second-half goals in their nondistrict victory in Española.

"I'm proud of the way we finished," A.J. Herrera, Santa Fe High head coach, said. "In the second half, we really played well and we converted most of our shots."

The Demons (4-3-1) scored only two goals off 15 shots in the first 40 minutes. After intermission, they went 4-for-14.

"Most of them were either right at the goalie or wide," Herrera said of his team's first-half shooting.

The two that found the net were Issac De Luna's penalty kick in the 12th minute and Andrew Borrego's unassisted goal in the 26th minute.

After intermission, the Demons tallied three goals in nine minutes, beginning with Rhett Spencer's score in the 52nd minute. Borrego followed in the 54th minute, while De Luna scored in the 61st minute. Borrego capped the scoring in the 78th minute.

De Luna collected a pair of assists, while Julian Martinez assisted on Borrego's first goal of the second half.

Desert Academy 2, East Mountain 1

Ram Khalsa of Desert Academy didn't show up at Alto Vista with an entourage. That was provided by East Mountain.

Still, Khalsa scored the match-winner in the 48th minute, as the Wildcats improved to 6-0.

"They marked Ram heavily," Rob Lochner, Desert Academy head coach, said. "They had two, three guys marking him consistently."

That was expected after Khalsa scored three goals in the first meeting.

Desert Academy never trailed. Danny Archuleta's header off a Jeremy Upsal cross untied a scoreless match in the 33rd minute. Daniel Machon knotted the score in the 42nd minute.

It was one of only two shots by East Mountain. Desert Academy finished with 10.

"We'll be working on our shot placement in preparation for Santa Fe Prep," Lochner said.

The Wildcats face the Blue Griffins on Wednesday. It will be the District 2A-AAA opener for Desert Academy.

GIRLS SOCCER

Santa Fe High 8, Española Valley 1

Claire Bartlett netted a season-high four goals as the Demonettes outscored the Lady Sundevils 6-1 in the second half of the nondistrict match in Española.

"Needless to say, I was a little disappointed at halftime," Katie Roberts, Santa Fe High head coach, said.

She wasn't alone.

The Demonettes held a team meeting before the first touch. The goals they set, weren't reached. At least, not until the second half.

"This gives us some momentum going into the Capital match," Roberts said of today's nondistrict meeting with the Lady Jaguars.

Of Bartlett's four goals, her dribble down the right sideline and shot into the upper far post was memorable.

"She didn't have too much of an angle, but she killed it into the 90," Roberts said.

Emma Ensign-Church added two goals, and Lela Montoya and Kristin Graham each scored one for the Demonettes (2-6).
