A 2-nil advantage at halftime was cause for concern, not celebration for the Blue Griffins of Santa Fe Preparatory.

Huh?

It's true.

Santa Fe Prep held a two-goal advantage over Clovis on Saturday before falling 3-2 in overtime in girls soccer. The Blue Griffins still hadn't put it behind them Thursday. Especially, when they came to the sideline leading Monte del Sol 2-0 at intermission.

"We talked about it," Rennae Ross, Santa Fe Prep head coach, said.

The second half was even-Steven. Well, at least as far as goals scored. The Blue Griffins left Brennand Field with a 3-1 victory in the District 2A-AAA match.

Santa Fe Prep put 10 shots on frame.

"That's been one of our problems," Ross said of her team's lack of shots on goal. "Today, it wasn't."

The Blue Griffins have Amanda Alexander to thank for increased production.

Alexander, a senior, forward, scored two goals. The first came off her chest. The second came off her stomach. They were her first goals of the season.

"I like how they found ways to score," Ross said.

Elizabeth Lanman assisted Alexander's second goal. That came only minutes before the freshman standout left the match with a concussion.

Kiki Lenihan scored a goal and collect an assist for Prep (4-6 overall, 1-1 in District 2A-AAA).

Alyssa Maunders tallied the lone goal for Monte del Sol (2-5-1, 0-1) in the 61st minute on a direct kick from 20 yards out.

That type of play was what Monte del Sol head coach Justin Najaka wanted to see a little more often.

"All in all, we had 25 minutes of excellent play and the rest wasn't quite as good," he siad. "We were moving the ball well. It took us well into the second half before we really woke up and picked up the pace.

"But it was just a little too late."

What was consistent the whole match was the play of Lady Dragons sweeper Kyle Miller, a freshman.

"She did a phenomenal job on defense today and really controlled that defense," Najaka said.

BOYS SOCCER

When the communication is bad, so are the Demons.

The first half was filled with that as the Ravens took a 2-0 lead into the break at Santa Fe High. One goal came on a penalty kick off a hand ball in the box.

"It was just terrible," Demons head coach A.J. Herrera said. "We weren't communicating with each other. We weren't playing as a team."

The second half was more to Herrera's liking, but the pressure the Demons (4-5-1 overall) applied on Rio Grande's goal only exacerbated the frustration as a couple of shots bounce off the goal. Then the Ravens scored on a breakaway at the 65th minute as they outshot Santa Fe High 13-10.

Demons goalkeeper Georgie Quintana had five saves.

VOLLEYBALL

Capital 3, Farmington 0

The Lady Jaguars' serving kept the Lady Scorpions from mounting much of an attack in a 25-11, 25-12, 25-25 nondistrict win in Edward A. Ortiz Memorial Gymnasium.

Regina Ritchie recorded 10 service points in Game 1 and added seven kills overall to lead Capital, while Megan Petty and Paola Franco each had six points from the service line.

"We served well enough to get on some big runs, which allowed us to try some different things," Capital head coach Natalie Garcia said. "That helped us get some flexibility with some of the girls who stepped into different positions."

The Lady Jaguars improved to 4-4.

Bosque School 3, Monte del Sol 0

The Lady Bobcats were quick to dispose of the Lady Dragons, 25-15, 25-15, 25-12, in a nondistrict match at Fort Marcy Complex.

Lady Dragons head coach Shanna Marsh-Martinez found something in her search for progress.

"It was the best game I saw all season because I saw movement and communication," Marsh-Martinez said. "If we can build on that, I think we'll be fine when district season comes."

Rachel Franklin and Destanie Gurule each had seven service ponts, while five of six players recorded kills for Monte del Sol, which fell to 0-7.

The circle will be unbroken

Charles MacKay became Santa Fe Opera's third general director on Oct. 1, 2008. Looked at one way, that means he'll have been on the job just 276 days when the 2009 season opens on Friday, July 3. On the other hand, there's an excellent case to be made that MacKay has been preparing for this position, sometimes on the job, for quite a bit longer. Try 40-some years. »Story
