Sidewinders smash five HRs, no-hit Albuquerque through seven innings

ALBUQUERQUE — Billy Buckner pitched seven no-hit innings, Donnie Kelly homered twice, and Tucson feasted on Albuquerque pitching yet again in an 11-2 victory Sunday afternoon in Pacific Coast League baseball at Isotopes Park.

The Sidewinders surpassed 10 runs for the third successive game — all wins — against the Isotopes. They did it with 16 hits, including five home runs, in the penultimate game of the series.

Alex Romero and Trot Nixon hit back-to-back home runs in the first inning, Kelly added a solo home run in the fourth and a three-run home run in the fifth, and Jamie Whitesell cleared the left-center field fence for a three-run home run in the eighth.

Tucson led 11-0, with the first eight runs coming off starter Dallas Trahern, before the Isotopes scored their runs on John Gall's two-out single in the bottom of the ninth.

Manager Dean Treanor closed the clubhouse immediately following the loss, which was the fourth straight, for a team meeting. Not since a 7-3 win over Las Vegas on April 28 have the Isotopes allowed fewer than 10 runs.

Right-hander Frankie De La Cruz gets the start today for Albuquerque. De La Cruz is 3-1, but has a 9.00 earned-run-average. Juan Gutierrez (1-4) takes the mound for the Sidewinders.

Gutierrez has a tough act to follow. Buckner retired 21 straight and was a walk away from perfection through seven innings. Jason Wood led off the second with a walk, but that was erased when Dallas McPherson grounded into a double play.

Tim Raines Jr.'s sliding catch of Andrew Beattie's sinking line drive in the seventh was the lone lump in Buckner's throat.

Until the eighth.

That's when Wood lined a 1-1 pitch into right field for a single and McPherson followed with a single to right. But Kelly started a double play and Dante Brinkely ground out to end the threat.

Buckner (1-3) left after the eighth.

Curios didn't kill this cat

Jonathan Batkin wants to make a few things about New Mexico's curio trade and silversmithing perfectly clear. If he debunks some myths along the way, so much the better. And so much the easier for him. Batkin, director of The Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian, has studied and lived with this subject for decades.  »Story

Triassic journey: New exhibit pays tribute to an ancient survivor

In the broad spectrum of geologic time, Kirby the lungfish is a survivor. His species was old long before the Triassic, a time period that began 250 million years ago, when the ancient creatures watched from murky rivers as 38-foot-long crocodilelike reptiles called phytosaurs sprang to the surface,  »Story
