ALAMEDA, Calif. — Early in Tom Cable's first practice as Oakland Raiders interim head coach, the special teams players gathered at midfield in a huddle before they realized someone was missing.
Cable was standing in the end zone when he heard one of his players call out for him and he quickly rushed to join the huddle before the session could break up.
"I didn't know I was supposed to do that," Cable said. "I'll catch up pretty quick. I catch on good."
Cable's first day since taking over for the fired Lane Kiffin had a few minor bumps but mostly went rather smoothly.
He ran a quick-paced practice that focused on tempo and efficiency after beginning the day with a team meeting.
The message to his players was to disregard the circus of the past three weeks when Kiffin's job security was a daily question and some of the conflicts within the organization were revealed to the public.
"Once something happens, there's kind of that period of time where you say, 'Whew,' you know, get over it and then you're able to get back up, get on your feet and get on the horse and let's go," he said. "And I think that's what we did today. We'll move forward."
Giants
New York kicker Lawrence Tynes has had swelling in his injured left knee after almost every workout and does not appear close to returning to action.
Tynes injured his knee in training camp and had arthroscopic surgery before the season.
Titans
On Wednesday, Vince Young practiced for the first time
since spraining his left knee Sept. 7 and sparking concern after police were called to help search for him.
He was limited, but took a few snaps with both the scout team and the first-team offense.
Redskins
Washington defensive end Jason Taylor appears likely to miss a second straight game as he recovers from calf surgery.
Taylor did not practice and was limited to doing some jogging along the side of the field.
Bengals
Cincinnati quarterback Carson Palmer handed off during practice but didn't participate in plays that called for a pass, part of the plan to help his sore elbow heal.
Head coach Marvin Lewis plans to wait until late in the week to decide whether Palmer will play on Sunday in Dallas.
Cardinals
Arizona wide receiver Anquan Boldin has a fractured sinus as a result of what he acknowledges was the worst hit he's received in his football career.
The standout receiver doesn't know how long he will be sidelined, but when he returns, he says, there will be no change in his trademark tough, aggressive style.
Steelers
Pittsburgh brought back two players from last season by re-signing Najeh Davenport and promoting Gary Russell from the practice squad to add depth at a depleted running back roster.
Patriots
New England head coach Bill Belichick denied the claim by Raiders owner Al Davis that Patriots had a workout with Randy Moss before obtaining him in a trade with Oakland in 2007.
Bills
Cornerback Terrence McGee, who wore a brace on his left knee and walked with a noticeable limp, missed practice as the team prepared to play at Arizona this weekend.
Saints
New Orleans brought back Joey Harrington as their third quarterback, who first joined the Saints on Sept. 19, shortly before a game at Denver, but was released last week when injuries left New Orleans short at other positions.
Bengals
Wide receiver Chris Henry rejoined Cincinnati at practice and could play against Dallas on Sunday.
