A night of quick fights ended with a battle of endurance Friday in the mixed martial arts cage fights at Alumni Hall on the campus of the College of Santa Fe.
The only fight of the night that went to the judges' cards was the main event, and Rodney Romero of Santa Fe scored a unanimous decision over Donnie Martinez of Alamogordo, improving Romero's pro record to 6-0.
The card included seven amateur bouts and three pro bouts with Romero and Josh Montoya of Santa Fe winning two of the pro fights.
Romero is an endurance fighter with all six of his bouts going the full three rounds.
"My toughest fight is in training," Romero said. "I stuck to my gameplan. I wasn't finding my range, so I didn't want to take any chances."
Romero took Martinez to the mat and beat him by being the better grappler.
"I like to wear them out," he said, "make them quit. He was slowing down, but he wasn't quitting."
Montoya relied on his training to beat Paco Castillo of Hereford, Texas, with a naked choke hold in the first round. Montoya started the bout by taking Castillo down right away, but he recovered.
Then Castillo was on top on the mat and Montoya escaped. On the third trip to the mat, Montoya got the advantage and used it with the choke hold.
"That's what I do all day, everyday," Montoya said. "When he had me, I wasn't nervous at all. I've trained too much to get nervous."
Montoya was in control on the third takedown.
"I wanted to hurt him. I wanted to beat him up. The choke was there. If he's not going to protect his neck, you've got to take it."
In the amateurs, Lee Martinez of Santa Fe scored a first-round win over David Valverde of Los Lunas. Martinez took the fight on short notice but threw Valverde to the mat and pounded on him before it was stopped 2:54 into the bout.
"I wanted to make it quick. That was quick enough. I don't think I could have lasted two rounds," said Martinez, who was still working to make weight on Thursday. "When I got him down, he kept trying to work up. I figured I might as well punch him while he was down there. I thought I did well for the time I had. I want to fight again, soon. I love it."
Santa Fe's Mike Graham scored a first-round win over Andrew Vigil of Los Lunas with a rear naked choke hold.
"When I got him down it was hard to punch him," Graham said. "Once I got my right leg in, I knew I had a chance to get him in a choke hold. I was looking for a way to inflict pain. At first, I waned to hit him in his face, but I couldn't."
Sean Martinez of Santa Fe lost in the first round of his bout against Algin Mendez when Mendez got Martinez down and was hitting him at will.
"I went for a shot and he sprawled," Martinez explained. "In this game, it is 50-50 you're going to get your ass whipped."
