Senior night is always a special event, but Capital High School head coach Natalie Garcia feels sometimes players forget the purpose of the night — to win a volleyball match.

At least her team rebounded to complete a 25-13, 24-26, 23-25, 25-15, 15-9 win over the Taos Lady Tigers in District 2AAAA play in Edward A. Ortiz Memorial Gymnasium on Saturday night.

"It's always been an emotional thing for the girls," Garcia said. "But it takes them a while to snap out of it and realize what it is we need to do and to get the job done."

It took some hard hitting from Vandorra Montoya, who had 13 kills, and the energetic play of Carla Gallegos to rally from the 2-1 deficit in games.

"We had to make some subs and get some girls in there to get the tempo of the game going a little bit faster," Garcia said.

Erika Ortega led Capital (12-6 overall, 6-1 2AAAA) with 16 kills, and Paolo Franco had 44 assists.

Santa Fe Preparatory 3, Pecos 0

The Blue Griffins ended the District 4AA season with a 25-23, 25-20, 25-15 win over Pecos in Prep Gymnasium, but it wasn't the kind of finish their head coach wanted.

"I don't think we looked as sharp or as focused or as energetic as we have," Prep head coach Chris Chakeres said. "That being said, it's nice to come out with a 3-0 victory. We do need to figure out how to get playing at our tempo and energy level because next week is the district tournament."

The Blue Griffins (10-10 overall, 4-2 4AA) are the second seed for the district tourney and play either Monte del Sol or Pecos in the semifinal match. Game time and date will be determined today.

Ellee Cook had 10 kills, while Alexandria Portillo scored 16 points on serve in the school's "Volley for the Cure" match.

Desert Academy 3, New Life Baptist 0

The sweep of the New Life, a private school in Albuquerque on probationary status, was a treat for the Lady Wildcats, because it was the last time they can relax for the rest of the season.

Desert Academy (10-8 overall) still won 25-16, 25-21, 25-22.

"They did take care of business but I could tell they were relaxed a little bit and had a little fun," Desert Academy head coach Natalie Passalacqua said. "It was nice to do that before going into next week's practices."

Maredith Davis had 10 service points and Corine Garcia doled out 12 assists.

The Lady Wildcats are the top seed for the District 2A Tournament, and play in the championship match Saturday in New Mexico School for the Deaf's Larson Gym. They also are guaranteed a spot in the Class A State Tournament that begins in two weeks.

Victory Christian 3, Santa Fe Waldorf 0

The Lady Centurions' 25-14, 25-18, 25-17 win in both team's District 2A finale is a warmup for Monday night.

The teams play again in the first round of the district tournament. Waldorf (1-14 overall, 1-9 2A) is seeded sixth, while Victory Christian, which finished in a tie for first at 7-3 with Desert Academy and Evangel Christian, is No. 3.

Waldorf head coach Daniel Wendland feels the program is close to turning a corner in its development.

He has Games 2 and 3 to thank for that

"We were down 13-12 (in game 2) and 14-12," Wendland said. "If the ball bounces once or twice our way we might get some momentum. We just weren't able to take it to that next level. I hope we can do it on Monday."

Tanya Gollogly had 15 service points and four kills to pace the Lady Wolves, and Kayla Salyer had five assists.
