The Lady Horsemen of St. Michael's went on the road and overcame quite the fight from the Lady Tigers of Raton in a 34-32, 25-17, 27-25 District 2AAA volleyball win Thursday.

It was the first district match for both teams.

"It was a very good match," Chela Butler, St. Michael's head coach, said. "We were very happy to come out with a 1-0 record in the district. Jessica Madrid and Sarah Hattis played well for us."

Hattis lead the Lady Horsemen (8-4 overall) with nine kills and Liz Othmer added eight.

Albuquerque Sandia 3, Santa Fe High 0

The Demonettes were short on confidence and it showed on the defensive side as the Lady Matadors won, 25-21, 25-16, 25-20, in a District 2AAAAA match in Albuquerque.

Sandia's starting six had a definite height advantage, but the other rotations looked comparable to Santa Fe High. Unfortunately, the Demonettes (5-9 overall, 1-1 2AAAAA) didn't see it that way.

"We missed out on some opportunities," Santa Fe High head coach Sam Estrada said. "We were their equal skill-wise, but didn't play like we had confidence. Defensively, we weren't in the right places to dig balls and we just kind of gave it to them."

Shivaughn Hatt led Santa Fe High with 10 kills.

West Las Vegas 3, Santa Fe Indian School 1

Yesterday's results have nothing to do with today's.

That's the bitter lesson the Lady Braves of Santa Fe Indian School learned in a District 2AAA-opening match in Gillie Lopez Gymnasium.

Despite sweeping the Lady Dons in the Tournament of Champions, SFIS nearly got swept itself, as West Las Vegas won 25-17, 20-25, 25-19, 25-21.

"A huge misconception is for any team to think they can walk in any gym in this district and beat a team twice in a row," SFIS head coach Seatha Chavez said. "Twenty one errors in Game 3 and 18 in Game 4 are not going to beat anyone with those kind of statistics.

"We can only look up from here."

The Lady Braves are 6-4 overall.

NMSD 3, Santa Fe Waldorf 0

Santa Fe Waldorf saw some things it hadn't seen all season in an opponent.

"That was probably the best team we played all year," head coach Daniel Wendland said of NMSD. "We hadn't seen a team that hit the ball so hard at us."

The Lady Roadrunners prevailed 25-19, 25-17, 25-12 in the District 2A match.

Maya Shakur had two kills to lead Waldorf, which fell to 0-5.

The circle will be unbroken

Charles MacKay became Santa Fe Opera's third general director on Oct. 1, 2008. Looked at one way, that means he'll have been on the job just 276 days when the 2009 season opens on Friday, July 3. On the other hand, there's an excellent case to be made that MacKay has been preparing for this position, sometimes on the job, for quite a bit longer. Try 40-some years. »Story
