Ed Velie made a list Wednesday, and almost everything on it didn't sound very good to the head girls soccer coach at St. Michael's High School.

It shouldn't, not after Bosque School earned a crucial 2-0 nondistrict win in Albuquerque.

Velie called it crucial because he felt the winner probably will be the second seed in the Class A-AAA State Tournament behind Albuquerque Sandia Preparatory.

Advantage, Lady Bobcats.

"There were so many things wrong, I was writing them down," Velie said. "I don't normally do that. They put together a poor performance at an inopportune time."

"I was talking to my assistant coach, and I said, 'We might not be the best team in the state come November, but we'll be the fittest.' "

Both teams had 10 shots on frame, but only the Lady Bobcats (7-5) found the back of the net. The first score came from Kenzie King in the 59th minute. Mariah Webber added an insurance goal in the 73rd minute.

The Lady Horsemen (11-4) forced Bosque School goalkeeper Kelsey Meigs to make three saves, while Margaret Hickey was much busier with eight.

"I feel like we didn't pass well or communicate well," Velie said. "Our shots really weren't on frame and Margie had to make more saves because there were way more on frame."

Santa Fe Preparatory 2, Monte del Sol 1

Rennae Ross could say something about her Blue Griffins she hadn't all season.

"It was the first time we came back from being down all year," Santa Fe Prep's head coach said of her team's District 2A-AAA match.

The Lady Dragons (3-8-1 overall, 0-3 2A-AAA) had a 1-0 lead on Alyssa Maunders' goal in the sixth minute at the Municipal Recreation Complex, but Julie Bertram scored in the 29th minute and Catherine Monks untied the 1-1 knot six minutes later.

"We kinda fell apart defensively there and they score within seven minutes," Monte del Sol head coach Justin Najaka said.

Santa Fe Prep (6-8, 3-1) ended up with a 12-11 lead in shots.

The circle will be unbroken

Charles MacKay became Santa Fe Opera's third general director on Oct. 1, 2008. Looked at one way, that means he'll have been on the job just 276 days when the 2009 season opens on Friday, July 3. On the other hand, there's an excellent case to be made that MacKay has been preparing for this position, sometimes on the job, for quite a bit longer. Try 40-some years. »Story
