Shay Aguirre could not be stopped Friday.

Kirtland Central's 5-foot-9, 174-pound running back tore through the Capital High defense for six rushing touchdowns as the fifth-seeded Broncos cruised to a 54-24 win at Broncos Stadium in the first round of the Class AAAA state football playoffs.

Capital, the 12th seed for the playoffs, finished the 2008 season with a 5-6 record.

Kirtland Central (8-3) plays No. 4 Artesia in a AAAA quarterfinal at the Bulldog Bowl on Nov. 22.

Aguirre did most of his damage during a 9-minute period in which he recorded four of his scores.

It started with a 78-yard touchdown run for a 20-0 Kirtland Central lead with 2:20 to go in the second quarter.

He scored against 20 seconds later from a yard out after Marcus Barela fumbled deep in Bronco territory for 27-0.

Aguirre scored twice more in the third quarter with touchdown runs of 30 and 59 yards to make it 40-7 with 5:32 left in the third quarter.

Aguirre's fifth touchdown came right after the Jaguars got on the scoreboard with a 10-yard touchdown pass from Barela to Mark Maes to make it 33-7.

The game was halted for 10 minutes in the fourth quarter when half of the stadium lights went out.

In another AAAA playoff game, No. 7 Los Alamos beat No. 10 Moriarty 35-7 at Sullivan Field.

The circle will be unbroken

Charles MacKay became Santa Fe Opera's third general director on Oct. 1, 2008. Looked at one way, that means he'll have been on the job just 276 days when the 2009 season opens on Friday, July 3. On the other hand, there's an excellent case to be made that MacKay has been preparing for this position, sometimes on the job, for quite a bit longer. Try 40-some years. »Story

Nevada's nuclear secret

CENTRAL NEVADA TEST AREA, Nev. — At the center of a desolate valley in the middle of Nevada, more than a dozen miles from the nearest paved road, one of the few signs of human activity is a rusty steel well casing that juts oddly out of the desert floor. »Story
