Offense wasn't an issue for the Wolves of Santa Fe Waldorf.
But ball-handling was in overtime of a nondistrict game against Mountainair in Fort Marcy Complex on Thursday.
The Mustangs grabbed a pair of steals to give them a four-point lead that the Wolves could not dent, and went on to an 87-83 win.
Mountainair also was aided by post Ruben Lovato, who chipped in with eight of his 22 points to break a 73-73 tie at the end of regulation.
"We just couldn't make the defense happen for us," Waldorf head coach Jake Yeager said. "With about a minute and a half to go, it was apparent that we couldn't recover."
That spoiled a 43-point performance from Wolves junior guard Brad Linch. He hit all eight free throws and knocked down five 3-pointers. But he saved his best for drives to the lane.
"We had a pretty good swing offense where we would get the defense into motion and he was able to penetrate and make baskets," Yeager said.
Casey Anderson added 20 for Waldorf, which fell to 8-6. Mountainair was led by Josh Vallejos, who had 28 points.
At least the loss has no impact on the District 2A race. The Wolves, who are 6-0 in the district, can secure the top seed for the 2A tournament with a win over Evangel Christian on Saturday.
St. Michael's 43, Las Vegas Robertson 30
The Cardinals were within 25-23 of the Horsemen heading into the fourth quarter of a low-scoring District 2AAA affair in Michael Marr Gymnasium, but the Horsemen erased any chance of an upset by outscoring Robertson 18-7 the rest of the way.
St. Michael's (16-7 overall, 7-0 2AAA) had only one double-digit scorer — Jordan Romero with 16 points. Mike Martinez had 13 points to lead the Cardinals.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Santa Fe Waldorf 46, Mountainair 43
The Wolves pressed the Lady Mustangs into 13 second-half turnovers, which led to a 42-34 lead with less than 4 minutes to go in a nondistrict game in Fort Marcy Complex.
Then Waldorf (7-15) showed what it could with a lead, as Mountainair never got closer than the final score.
"We just basically melted the clock well," Wolves head coach Daniel Wendland said. "We made some good decisions with the ball and the lead. That was a nice learning curve, because we've been on the other end, trying to come back."
Emma Aders had 22 points to pace Waldorf, and Malika Stuerznickel added 13. Brooke Roybal led the Lady Mustangs with 16 points, and Elena Chavez added 14.
