After five years of playing varsity and two stints as head coach, Anika Amon witnessed a first for Santa Fe Preparatory on Saturday night.
A 24-0 first quarter ... in favor of the Blue Griffins.
"Probably down 24-nothing," Amon joked.
The Blue Griffins parlayed their 24-point head start into a 59-16 District 4AA victory over the Lady Dragons of Monte del Sol in Prep gymnasium.
"This was a good confidence booster," Amon said. "We needed it. We have Mora on Tuesday."
The Rangerettes, one of the state's elite programs in Class AA, are the 4AA favorites. Earlier in the week, Mora pinned a 75-8 loss on the Lady Dragons.
The Blue Griffins followed a familiar blueprint against Monte del Sol — press early and press often.
"Our pressure really got to them," Amon said of the first quarter.
The Blue Griffins (10-8, 1-1 4AA) turned down the pressure but kept their intensity high.
"Everyone played, and everyone played well," Amon said.
Ten Blue Griffins scored, with Dominique Ehrl topping the list with 15 points. Sarah Ihlefeld chipped in 12.
Alicia Roybal scored six points for the Lady Dragons, who trailed 37-4 at halftime and 53-7 entering the fourth quarter.
Desert Academy 63, Victory Christian 50
Maredith Davis has added a new piece to her arsenal — a jump shot.
The slashing guard gave the Lady Centurions a taste of that as she scored a career-high 30 points in a nondistrict game. She also hauled in a team-best 15 rebounds
"She's really been stepping it up," Desert Academy head coach Natalie Passalacqua said. "With Maredith, she normally gets a lot of layups off of steals in transition. But the last couple of games, she's been hitting more outside shots and 3-pointers."
It has shown as she has scored more than 20 points in her last three games.
It helped the Lady Wildcats (11-7) to a 21-10 lead after a quarter and a 35-16 halftime margin.
Estrella Lopez added 17 points, and Katie Boot had 10 for Desert Academy.
Pojoaque Valley 40, St. Michael's 22
The only thing the Elkettes didn't see from the Lady Horsemen was the "kitchen sink defense" in a District 2AAA game in Ben Luján Gymnasium.
"I was impressed with how our team executed and with our toughness," Lanse Carter, Pojoaque Valley head coach, said. "The girls held their composure and executed against the special defenses that were run against us."
The Elkettes know a thing or two about leaving sweat at both ends of the court.
"I know that our defensive pressure did a great job," Carter said.
Numbers, please.
Two, eight, three, nine. Those were the points per quarter scored by the Lady Horsemen.
"I think we did a good job making it difficult for our opponent to get into their offense," Carter said.
Pojoaque Valley also had a single-digit quarter, when it scored five points in the second. But their leads were 12-2 after one, 17-10 at halftime and 30-13 at the end of three.
Dionna Montoya scored 10 points for the Elkettes (15-7, 5-1 2AAA).
Alexa Chavez scored 14 points for the Lady Horsemen (10-10, 3-3).
Evangel Christian 42, Santa Fe Waldorf 20
Daniel Wendland is looking for small victories in a season full of losses. The Waldorf head coach found one in a District 2A loss in Albuquerque.
"We won the third quarter," Wendland said, "which was a good lift for us. It's one of the little positives we're looking for. Like I told the girls, if we can win four quarters, we're going to win a game."
Waldorf dipped to 0-4 in the district, 1-10 on the season.
"Tonight, we couldn't hit our shots and we got down quick," Wendland said of the 18-3 first quarter.
The score was 48-11 at halftime. The Lady Wolves outscored the Lady Eagles 6-5 in the third quarter.
Sophia Richard finished with 13 points and 13 rebounds for Waldorf.
Jordyn Castellano scored 18 points and Tina Morris added 14 for Evangel Christian.
Mora 54, Pecos 46
Forced into a zone defense because of foul trouble, the Rangerettes outscored the Lady Panthers 17-5 in the pivotal third quarter of the District 4AA game in Mora.
The score was 31-31 at halftime.
The Rangerettes held a five-point advantage late in the second quarter when Andrea Romero picked up her fourth foul and collected a technical foul after slamming the ball into the floor.
Pecos converted 2-of-4 free throws and drilled a 3-pointer at the buzzer following a Mora turnover.
Romero, who scored 13 first-half points, wasn't the only starter in foul trouble at the break. That's why head coach David Salcido went to a zone after intermission.
It worked.
"We hit the boards and blocked out really well," Salcido said. "We stopped giving them second- and third-shot opportunities."
Monique Duran and Jessica Garcia scored 13 and 11 points, respectively, for the Rangerettes (14-8, 2-0 4AA).
For Pecos (7-9, 1-1), Geneva Rivera scored 16 points.
Mesa Vista 46, Questa 38
The Lady Trojans, coming off a 10-day layoff due to the inclement weather, ran their winning streak to nine in a row and remained undefeated in District 3AA.
"I had a feeling it was going to be a little rocky tonight," Richard Montoya, Mesa Vista head coach, said.
The Lady Wildcats led 10-8 after one quarter and the teams evenly divvied all of 12 points in the third quarter. But the Lady Trojans' 11-4 second quarter gave them the lead they would not relinquish.
"It was a good win because it was on the road," Montoya said.
Carmelita Trujillo scored 12 points for Mesa Vista (16-1, 1-0 3AA). Crystal Martinez and Julia Martinez added 10 points apiece.
For Questa, Kelsey Zimmerman and Nichole Sanchez scored 11 and 10 points, respectively.
