Tuesday night was simply a formality.

Santa Fe High and Española Valley are salivating for Friday night.

The top two teams in District 2AAAA will face off for what amounts to a regular season district title battle after both teams won their district games Tuesday.

The Lady Sundevils easily bested Bernalillo 56-32 in Edward Medina Gymnasium, while the Demonettes handled visiting Capital 57-14 in Toby Roybal Memorial Gymnasium.

It won't be as easy when the Lady Sundevils head to Santa Fe for a highly anticipated rematch.

The Demonettes won Round 1 59-47 on Jan. 17.

"We know they're coming after us," said Elmer Chavez, Santa Fe High head coach. "We just have to be ready and prepared. We had been preparing for Española all week. I was hoping we wouldn't overlook Capital."

The Lady Jaguars did keep pace in the first quarter, with a 9-all knot.

It was all downhill after that as Capital scored five points the rest of the way.

Kayla Herrera led the Demonettes (15-5 overall, 4-0 2AAAA) with 16 points, while Selena Gonzales had four to pace Capital.

Meanwhile, the Lady Sundevils (20-3, 3-1) were sloppy on defense, although they led 28-17 at the half.

"We still weren't very happy with the defense," said Ron Drake, Lady Sundevils head coach. "I thought in the second half we played better defense [allowing 15 points]."

Desiree Howie had 18 points for Española, while Lauren Quintana had 17 and Ashlynn Trujillo added 13.

S.F. INDIAN SCHOOL 70, SANDIA PREPARATORY 22

When Makayla Holiday is smiling, the Lady Braves smile with her.

The senior forward sank four 3-pointers and scored 21 points to lead Indian School (16-4, 3-1 5AAA).

"She finally looked like Makayla," said Cindy Roybal, SFIS head coach. "I was telling her she was putting too much on herself as the team captain. She was too concerned with everybody else."

Also coming out of her shell was Jasmine Felipe, who had 12 points and played tenacious defense that mimicked junior forward Danielle Nelson, who is out for at least a week with a leg injury.

Bridget Lee added 13 points in a supporting role.

PIEDRA VISTA 50, POJOAQUE VALLEY 33

The trip to Farmington was not a pleasant one for the Elkettes, who took a break from District 5AAA play.

Tenisha Lee led the way for the Lady Panthers with 10 points, while Briana Walking Eagle and Madison Hunt each had eight.

Cheyenne Cordova had 13 points to lead Pojoaque (9-12), and Amber Roybal had eight.

DESERT ACADEMY 39, ALBUQUERQUE MENAUL 30

The Lady Wildcats improved to 2-4 in District 2A play thanks to the play of ... Dakota Vigil?

It was her defense on Lady Panthers guard Ashdyn Monahan that helped Desert Academy (4-15) extend a 19-18 halftime lead. Monahan scored six of her 17 points after the break.

"She put a lot of pressure on her," said Gerald Lovato, Lady Wildcats head coach. "I told Dakota if we can get the ball out of her hands, we can win this game."

Vigil also had nine points and grabbed 10 rebounds in a supporting role to all-everything Estrella Flores, who had 20 points.

NEW MEXICO SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF 52, MAXWELL 20

The Lady Roadrunners easily handled the Lady Eagles in a nondistrict game in Larson Gymnasium.

Caldonia Wilding had 14 points to lead NMSD (7-8), Kimberly Herrera added and Amberly Luna had nine points and nine steals.
