The Rangerettes of Mora High School stayed all of 1 minute, 20 seconds in their locker room at intermission Friday.
It must have been a good first half.
It was.
That's not the reason behind their sudden return.
"We were getting a lot of looks. We just weren't finishing," said Mark Cassidy, Mora head coach. "I wanted them to get out and do more shooting."
But first, the Rangerettes had to wait until the Sapphires, Santa Fe Preparatory's dance team, finished their routine.
With the court clear, Mora started in a full-court, three-man weave, then went into a half-court shooting drill.
The result?
A 49-12 District 4AA girls basketball victory over the host Blue Griffins.
The 37-point difference had little to do with halftime.
The Rangerettes were well on their way to the lopsided victory by the break, leading 24-6. But, it took 8 minutes of struggle.
"Our offense dictates our defense," Cassidy said. "When we get off to a slow start, we struggle. That's what happened against Pecos."
That scenario was reprised against Santa Fe Prep.
Mora led 8-6 after one quarter.
Dominique Ehrl scored inside with 1:18 left for the Blue Griffins. The time of her field goal mattered because Santa Fe Prep's side of the scoreboard would not change for the next 13:02.
Here's what transpired during that time.
The Blue Griffins turned over the ball 10 times in the second quarter.
Ehrl, the freshman post, went to the bench with her third personal foul with 16 seconds remaining in the first quarter. After sitting the second quarter, she went to the bench for the final 6:28 of the third quarter with her fourth foul.
It made a difference.
"She's had a double-double her last two games," Janelle Haught, Santa Fe Prep head coach, said of Erhl. "She's been carrying us."
Cassidy's read the clippings.
"That took one-half or two-thirds of their game away from them," Cassidy said of Ehrl's absence.
There were 16 points scored in the second quarter, all by the Rangerettes. Melanie Romo scored the first six points of the third quarter before Lyle Kotsch ended Prep's drought with a layup at the 4:16 mark.
Romo and Franceska Alexander matched basket-for-basket for the Rangerettes, which preceded Monique Duran's closing the quarter with three unanswered points. The 11-0 run made it 41-8.
Romo finished with 18 points in three quarters for Mora (18-6 overall, 4-0 4AA).
Ehrl's five points were a team-best for Santa Fe Prep (1-19, 1-3).
"In the past two games, we've looked better than we have all season," Haught said. "We had 27 turnovers and we missed 26 shots. Mora's tough, but I'm not sure why we took a step back tonight."
The Rangerettes didn't change much at intermission. The plan was to shoot first, talk later.
