LARAMIE, Wyo. — Putting together a winning streak longer than two games has been a rare occurrence at Wyoming lately.
Should the Cowboys find a way to come up with a victory over The University of New Mexico today in Laramie, it would mark only the sixth time since 1998 that they have been able to string as many as three wins together.
Since a seven-game winning streak in the middle of the 1998 season, the Cowboys have had two three-game winning streaks in 1999, a three-game run in 2004, a four-game streak in 2005 and a three-game streak in 2006.
Wyoming (3-2) enters the New Mexico game after back-to-back victories over UNLV and Florida Atlantic.
"If we want to turn this program around, we need to start a streak, and you do that by taking it one game at a time," junior free safety Chris Prosinski said. "It's good to get back-to-back wins, and what we will try to do is build on that."
New Mexico comes into Laramie with an 0-5 record. But four of the losses were to Texas A&M, Tulsa, Air Force and Texas Tech, all of which will probably end up in bowl games at the end of the season.
"We know New Mexico is going to come in and be extremely hungry for a win," junior wide receiver David Leonard said. "We know they have played against some great competition and they have a better team than their record."
But New Mexico has had Wyoming's number recently.
The Lobos have beaten
the Cowboys in eight of their last nine meetings, including four straight at War Memorial Stadium — 30-29 in 2001, 26-3 in 2003, 27-24 in 2005 and 20-3 in 2007.
UW's last win over UNM came in 2006, a 14-10 victory in Albuquerque. The last time Wyoming beat New Mexico in Laramie was during the 1999 season, 42-28.
Today's game at War Memorial Stadium will mark Wyoming's 85th homecoming celebration, and the 60th to be played there.
UW's overall homecoming record is 40-41-3 (.494). Wyoming's homecoming record in War Memorial Stadium is 35-22-2 (.610).
