If this head coaching gig doesn't work out, Steve Jones has a future in snow removal.
"We had to take a foot of snow off the field," Jones, New Mexico Highlands University head baseball coach, said. "We hadn't been on the field in four or five days, but we were able to taking batting practice in the cage."
The way the Cowboys were swinging Saturday, they could have walked up to the plate with snow shovels and still put the ball into play.
Highlands amassed 37 runs off 38 hits in a 16-1, 21-3 nonconference sweep of Eastern New Mexico University at Brandt Field in Las Vegas, N.M.
Phillip Rodriguez, the senior catcher, led the hit parade with a combined five hits and six runs batted in.
P-Rod was 2-for-3 in the opener with three RBIs and was 3-for-3 with a double and home run in the second game.
Danny Brown went 3-for-4 with two home runs and four runs batted to back Drew Vassil, who earned the pitching win in the first game. Vassil worked six innings. He allowed four hits and struck out four.
David Saiz notched the win in the second game. He scattered nine hits over five innings and struck out four.
Oscar Sigala finished 2-for-5 with two doubles and three RBIs for the Cowboys in the second game.
"We walked only one guy pitching all day," Jones said. "We also committed just three errors and that's really good, considering the condition of the field."
The Cowboys were recently picked to finish second in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference preseason poll. Mesa State was voted into the top spot.
Vassil, meanwhile, was selected the RMAC preseason pitcher of the year.
The Cowboys were 39-21 a year ago. They return to action Friday in Abilene, Texas, for a two-day tournament.
