Robertson drops West Las Vegas

With a packed house to watch a intracity rivalry and celebrate the team's Dig Pink fundraiser and honor the team's parents, three Las Vegas Robertson seniors did their job of taking the drama out of Thursday's match with West Las Vegas.

Hitters Brooke Knezevich
(19 kills) and Jazmine Harge
(17 kills) dominated the net, and setter Daniella Montoya dished out 36 assists in a 25-17, 25-23, 25-14 sweep of West Las Vegas in the regular season and District 2AAA finale for both teams.

A pair of juniors also pitched in for the Cardinals — Marka Garcia had five aces and Brianna Bourbon had 10 digs.

Robertson secured the No. 2 seed for next week's 2AAA tournament and ends the season with a 14-5 overall record and 8-2 in the district.

Demonettes sweep Albuquerque High

The Santa Fe High volleyball team still might be a work in progress, but the résumé it built might be enough for the postseason.

The Demonettes completed the regular season with a 25-18, 25-20, 25-23 win at District 2AAAAA foe Albuquerque High on Thursday to wrap up the third seed for next week's district tournament.

Santa Fe High finishes with an 8-12 overall record and a 4-4 2AAAAA mark, but Demonettes head coach Sam Estrada would like a few more wins before the seeding committee has its say.

"Looking at the teams around the state, we are within that realm of possibility," Estrada said. "You never know, though. It's subjective when it comes to those at-large spots."

Against the Lady Bulldogs, Ashley Romero had four kills in Game 1 and finished with six overall, while Kamille Borrego-Ojinaga had seven kills and five aces to lead the Demonettes in those categories. Brie Villa added four aces.

Desert Academy earns state berth

The third time was the charm for the sophomore tandem of Estrella Flores and Katie Boot and senior Sasha Vidisheva.

After losing twice to Albuquerque Victory Christian in the regular season, the Desert Academy trio led the Lady Wildcats to a 25-19, 25-14, 13-25, 25-20 win in Thursday's District 2A semifinal, earning a berth in next week's Class A State Tournament.

"I had my whole team," Desert Academy head coach Stacy Brossy said of the difference Thursday. "Whether it was the flu, family trips or ACT/SAT testing, we didn't really ever have everyone playing together until the last week. But now is when it matters most, so we're pretty happy."

Flores had three aces and six kills and served her team from down 13-12 in Game 2 to a 23-13 lead. Boot added nine kills and Vidisheva had eight.

The win advances the Lady Wildcats to Saturday's district championship against No. 1 seed Evangel Christian.

Concert to honor Jensen Brown

The celebration of Jensen Brown's life will continue with song.

Chad Hollister, a family friend, will bring his group — the Chad Hollister Band — to play at the Santa Fe Brewing Co. on Thursday. All proceeds from his concert will go to the Think Jensen Fund with the Santa Fe Community Foundation.

Brown was a St. Michael's student and soccer player who died in an automobile accident in 2008. The last two summers produced the Jensen Games, a series of exhibition soccer matches to help raise money for the fund.

St. Michael's head coach Merritt Brown, Jensen's father, said Hollister was making a trip out west and wanted to stop in Santa Fe to help raise funds for his son's charity. Hollister also wrote a song in Jensen's honor soon after his death and copies were handed out at the Jensen Games.
