Stephen Randolph looked lost as reliever, but he is carving himself a niche in the Albuquerque Isotopes' rotation.
The left-hander gave up one hit over six innings as the Isotopes went on to a 3-0win over the Round Rock Express in Pacific Coast League baseball at The Dell Diamond on Saturday.
The Isotopes and the Express (both 29-33) are tied atop the PCL South Division standings, with the Oklahoma City RedHawks a half-game back.
Randolph, in just his fourth start, breezed through five hitless innings before Reggie Abercrombie grounded a single to center field to break up the no-hit bid to lead off the sixth. Randolph (2-2) exited after 93 pitches, with five strikeouts and three walks.
In four starts totaling 18 innings, Randolph has allowed just two runs. As a reliever, he had a 13.19 earned-run average.
The duo of Hyang-Nam Choi and Scott Strickland kept the Express hitless the rest of the way. An Abercrombie walk to open the ninth was the only baserunner for Round Rock after the sixth. Strickland posted his ninth save.
Albuquerque got on the scoreboard in the first, as Mitch Jones' double scored Chin-lung Hu for 1-0. Jones added a two-run home run — his 21st — in the fifth to complete the scoring. Jones was 2-for-4 with three RBIs on the evening, while Juan Gonzalez was 2-for-3 with a run scored.
The Isotopes finish the series with righty James McDonald (0-2, 4.24 ERA) taking the hill for today's 6:05 p.m. start. Round Rock counters with left-hander Josh Muecke (1-5, 6.75).
