The New Mexico Highlands University baseball team opened its season Friday afternoon in Odessa, Texas, beating previously unbeaten Tarleton State 4-2 in the opening round of the UT-Permian Basin Tournament.
Cowboys starting pitcher Greg Fowler (1-0) struck out 10 in six innings of work, then Eric Maupin pitched a perfect ninth to earn the save. Thomas King homered in the third inning, then Eric Scott delivered a two-run double and Luis Saenz and RBI single in the top of the seventh to erase a 2-1 deficit.
NMHU was slated to play two games Saturday -- a morning contest against Eastern New Mexico and a matinee against Incarnate Word.
