St. Michael's graduate Palermo shows well in golf tourney
The word "champion" is a common term applied to Jamie Palermo.
On Wednesday, it almost was applied again.
The 2010 St. Michael's High School graduate finished third for William Woods University in the NAIA Women's Golf Championship, but a second-day 81 at the par-73 course dropped her from atop the leaderboard.
After a 4-under 69 to start the tournament, Palermo started the day with a birdie to reach 5 under, but slid back quickly. She bogeyed four holes on the front nine, then had a double bogey and three more bogeys. Her 4-over total was three shots behind winner Kylie Barros of British Columbia University.
At St. Michael's, Palermo won a Class A-AAA individual title as a junior, which helped the Lady Horsemen to a team championship.

golf bid
Marty Sanchez Sr. shot his age in Wednesday's Santa Fe Senior Olympics Golf Tournament at Marty Sanchez Links de Santa Fe.
Fighting the cold and wind, Sanchez, 83, fired an 11-over 83 to qualify for this summer's New Mexico Senior Olympics in Las Cruces.
The top six finishers in each age group from Wednesday's event earned bids to the state games, which will be held at the New Mexico State University Golf Course on July 28.
Ex-coach refiles suit against New Mexico
ALBUQUERQUE — Former University of New Mexico assistant football coach J.B. Gerald has refiled his lawsuit against the school.
The Albuquerque Journal reports the amended complaint accuses head coach Mike Locksley, athletic director Paul Krebs and UNM of subjecting him to a hostile work environment.
The suit stems from a September 2009 incident in which Gerald, who is seeking compensatory and punitive damages, claims Locksley punched and choked him in the locker room. A judge last week dismissed his original lawsuit, which alleged assault, battery, retaliation and racial discrimination.
