They are cops and warehouse managers, home-alarm installers or maybe in between jobs right now. But tonight they will all fight mixed martial arts in a cage.

Que Locos Promotions of Santa Fe is holding a MMA card called Capital Punishment tonight in Alumni Hall at the College of Santa Fe.

Three professional bouts and nine amateur fights are on the card with the first fight starting at 7 p.m.

The nine amateur bouts will start the evening as it builds up to the pro fights. The main event is listed as Donnie Martinez of Alamogordo facing Rodney Romero of Santa Fe.

In the other pro bouts, Santa Fe's Josh Montoya will fight Paco Castillo of Hereford, Texas, and Carlos Lopez of Albuquerque meets Eugene Fliss of Belen.

Four amateurs from Santa Fe are on the undercard.

Romero comes into his bout with a 3-2 record. "I've been pro over a year now," says the 20-year-old. "The last time I fought was about three months ago. This is absolutely fun."

Mixed martial arts involve a lot of different abilities, such as boxing, kick boxing and grappling.

"What you do is dictated by how things are looking during the fight," Romero explains. "If you're losing in one area, try another."

In another pro bout, Lopez is coming off a loss, giving him a 6-4 record.

"My last fight was my fourth loss. I need to win this fight. I'll give it my all. I guess every fighter does that. I like standup, the boxing, but I feel comfortable with grappling. I just want to make certain we put on a good show."

Santa Fe's Montoya is only 18 and has a 2-0 record as a pro. "Mixed martial arts involves everything. My background is in Jiu Jitsu. I know I need to learn something new every day."

Montoya trains at Undisputed Fitness in Santa Fe.

"This is my town," he notes. "I'm not going to let anybody come in here and push me around."

Amateur Algin Mendez of Santa Fe is almost a senior citizen at 28. He'll be fighting at
205 pounds.

"Boxing and MMA are totally different. I'm fairly good with the grappling. I'm just excited to be fighting again. I haven't fought since May. There'll be a lot people there to see me."

Lee Martinez of Santa Fe will be fighting as an amateur at
145 pounds.

"They just called and invited me to fight the other day. I was at 163. I had to lose 18 pounds. I lost 6 pounds today. I've been doing MMA since I was like in the sixth grade. It doesn't matter what your style is. A punch is a punch, a kick is a kick. It's all the same when you get in there. I like to fight. It sure isn't for the money."

Mike Graham of Santa Fe will be in a 185-pound amateur fight.

"I want to go all the way to UFC," claims the 20-year-old. "I make a living by installing alarms, but I'd give that up in a minute if I could make enough by fighting."

Ticket prices are $25 general admission and $35 for ringside.
