A four-run fifth inning carried the Albuquerque Isotopes to a 7-2 victory over the Iowa Cubs at Principal Park on Monday in the Pacific Coast League baseball regular-season finale.
Xavier Paul hit a two-run double and Mitch Jones followed with a two-run home run as Albuquerque untied a 1-1 knot in the fifth. It was Jones' 35th home run of the season, which is tops in the PCL. Jones became the third successive Isotope to lead the PCL in home runs.
Albuquerque stretched the advantage to 7-1 in the seventh on a Blake DeWitt run-scoring triple and Sergio Garcia's RBI double.
Brent Leach earned the pitching victory with two scoreless innings of relief. Leach (2-0) entered in the eighth with runners on second and third and no outs. He stranded the runners after striking out the side.
Iowa starter Jeff Smardzija suffered the loss. Smardzija (6-6) allowed five runs on seven hits in 4 2/3 innings.
The Isotopes take today off before starting the first round of the PCL Playoffs on Wednesday at Isotopes Park. Albuquerque faces Memphis in a best-of-five series. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
The Isotopes (80-64) enter as the Southern Division champions of the American Conference. The Redbirds (77-57) won the Northern Division of the American Conference. Albuquerque and Memphis faced each other 16 times during the regular season. The Isotopes won 10 and were 6-2 against the Redbirds at Isotopes Park.
The second game is set for Thursday night at 7:05 at Isotopes Park. The series switches to Memphis on Friday.
