Quirky.

That's the way Pecos head coach Leroy Barela described Thursday night's District 2AA semifinal.

Odd solely for the fact that the Lady Panthers of Pecos (16-12) couldn't get to the stripe. They attempted four freebies all night.

The Lady Panthers of Peñasco, meanwhile, could -- and did. Again and again, on the way to a 43-35 win at Peñasco.

Twenty-four times in all, six of those coming in a pivotal third quarter that pretty much decided which team advanced to face No. 1 Mora on Saturday in Sen. Joseph Montoya Gymnasium.

Peñasco's six points off free throws eclipsed Pecos' point total in the third quarter.

"It was just a very strange game," Barela said. "I'm almost at a loss for words. It was a very physical game. We just weren't able to get to the free-throw line, and they were. I think that third quarter really tells the story alone."

Peñasco outscored Pecos 13-4 in the third, eventually building a 16-point lead in the fourth.

Pecos' Alex CdeBaca led a mini-rally, hitting a pair of 3s on the way to eight points, but it wasn't enough to compensate for the Lady Panthers' lack of free trips.

Marcella Sanchez had 19 points for Peñasco.

TAOS 58, RATON 44

Bring on Robertson.

No one broke double-figures for Raton, as the Lady Tigers romped in the District 2AAA semifinal in Otero Gymnasium.

For Taos, Thursday night's game was all about teamwork and solidarity.

Taos leaned heavily on Brittany Gonzales (22 points) and Marissa Mares (12 points), but also got a pair of eight-point contributions from two players.

"There was no inter-team stuff going on," said Robert Trujillo, Lady Tigers head coach. "Tonight our whole team got involved. Basically, everybody is coming together. We all have the same common goal -- to win a district title and head onto state."

The Lady Tigers trailed 7-6 after the first quarter before buckling down. They entered the break with a 22-15 lead that ballooned from that point.

"That second and third quarter was a breakout quarter for us," Martinez said. "We just came out with really good teammwork."

Taos now looks to reverse its fortunes against Robertson, which beat it by five and nine points in the the teams' meetings this season.
