Isotopes rally to down Zephyrs

New Orleans might have scored early, but a 5-1 lead didn't hold and Albuquerque went on to win 7-5 in a Pacific Coast League baseball game in front of 7,980 at Isotopes Park on Wednesday.

The Isotopes (60-72) scored six times in the sixth inning thanks to back-to-back homers from Andrew Beatie and Brett Hayes. Beatie, however, was the highlight as he hit a grand slam to left.

Steve Woodard (1-2) got the win in relief and the Isotopes bullpen pitched 6 1/3 innings of scoreless baseball.

Eude Brito (0-1) came on in relief for New Orleans and suffered the loss.

Instant replay deal reached with MLB

NEW YORK — Baseball umpires and management signed an agreement that will allow the sport to start using instant replay to help determine calls on the field.

Major League Baseball still hasn't determined when the use of replays will start. Installation of equipment has been going on at ballparks, and officials have said they hoped to start using replay in August.

Replays will be limited to boundary calls, such as determining whether fly balls were fair or foul, or whether they went over fences.

The circle will be unbroken

Charles MacKay became Santa Fe Opera's third general director on Oct. 1, 2008. Looked at one way, that means he'll have been on the job just 276 days when the 2009 season opens on Friday, July 3. On the other hand, there's an excellent case to be made that MacKay has been preparing for this position, sometimes on the job, for quite a bit longer. Try 40-some years. »Story

CENTRAL NEVADA TEST AREA, Nev. — At the center of a desolate valley in the middle of Nevada, more than a dozen miles from the nearest paved road, one of the few signs of human activity is a rusty steel well casing that juts oddly out of the desert floor. »Story
