The first half was a glimpse of what the Monte del Sol boys basketball team could be.
The second half was the realization of what the Dragons are.
Escalante used a half-court trap to disorganize Monte del Sol and the Lobos cruised to an 84-54 win in both teams' season opener. The Lobos held a 34-25 lead at the half before employing a triangle-and-two trap in the second half.
"We had about 25 or 30 turnovers (for the game)," Dragons head coach Jonathan Haack said. "We had them in the first half, but it was not as extreme. They just found our one weakness."
Matthew Trujillo led Escalante with 21 points, and Isaiah Maldonado added 18. Freshman Dennis Mares topped all Dragons scorers with a career-high 28 points, and Aaron Vogel scored 14.
Lady Trojans top Dulce
Junior Carmalita Trujillo scored 24 points and seniors Crystal Martinez and Samantha Giron scored 21 and 14 respectively as the Mesa Vista girls basketball team started the 2009-10 season with an easy 72-34 road win at Dulce.
"There were some mistakes, but not bad for a first game," Mesa Vista head coach Richard Montoya said. "We mixed up some presses on them and that worked well, but we still have a lot of work ahead."
Dulce's Elise Martinez led her team with 10 points.
