Monte del Sol hires boys soccer coach
Seven months later, Monte del Sol finally has found a new head boys soccer coach.
His name is Stuart Angel, who was hired on Wednesday. He replaces Seth Bidermen, who stepped down in December after four years at the helm.
Angel hails from Virginia, where he coached club level soccer and was an assistant men's soccer coach at Ferrum College. He also was a youth soccer coordinator in Loudon, Va., before moving to Santa Fe in January.
Angel is well aware of the challenges of coaching at the charter school.
"We don't have same numbers to draw from like other schools," Angel said. "So it cuts our player pool by a half to a third or a even an eighth. We just kind of got to do the best we can."
The Dragons were 4-14 in 2007, but recorded its first win in district play with a win of Santa Fe Preparatory.
Bogut will sign five-year extension
MILWAUKEE — Bucks center Andrew Bogut will sign a five-year, $72.5 million extension later this week, his agent said Wednesday.
Bogut, the top overall pick in the 2005 draft, was expected to sign the extension Friday, agent David Bauman said.
The agreement was first reported by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel on its Web site.
Bucks spokesman Dan Smyczek also confirmed Wednesday that there was an agreement on a deal.
"He's thrilled," Bauman told The Associated Press. "He feels like Milwaukee really stepped up and demonstrated to him he's a valued member of this team."
Witt, Islanders agree to terms
UNIONDALE, N.Y. — The New York Islanders signed alternate captain Brendan Witt to a two-year contract extension worth $6 million through the 2010-11 season.
In his two years with the Islanders, the hard-hitting defenseman played in 140 games with three goals and 18 assists. He often has been assigned the role of shutting down the opponent's top lines.
Witt, who will earn $3 million next season, will be paid $3.5 million in 2009-10 and $2.5 million in the final year of the deal.
USTA drops ads with Gimelstob
Former touring tennis pro Justin Gimelstob's sexist comments on a radio show have gotten him in trouble again.
Television commercials featuring Gimelstob promoting the U.S. Open Series are being scrapped by the U.S. Tennis Association because of what he said about Anna Kournikova and other women last month.
In the radio appearance, Gimelstob used a derogatory term to describe Kournikova, a former tennis player, and made suggestive comments about current top-25 player Nicole Vaidisova.
Gimelstob retired from the men's tennis tour last year and is on the board of the ATP.
Mattingly returns to Dodgers
LOS ANGELES — Don Mattingly will resume his duties as Los Angeles Dodgers hitting coach after the All-Star break.
Mattingly, hired as part of new manager Joe Torre's staff during the offseason, asked to be switched from hitting coach to major-league special assignment coach, citing family reasons.
Mike Easler, who has filled in as hitting coach on an interim basis, will remain with the Dodgers organization in another capacity.
The 1985 AL MVP during a New York Yankees career that lasted from 1982-95, Mattingly had spent the past four seasons as a coach under Torre with the Yankees. After Torre left New York, Mattingly lost out to Joe Girardi for the club's managerial job.
